  • Declining bactericidal effect of benzalkonium chloride for radiocarbon analysis of seawater: Salinity influence

    Open Access•Hiroshi A Takahashi, Koh Kakiuchida et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2026•References: 27

In freshwater samples, benzalkonium chloride (BAC) effectively prevents radiocarbon ( 14 C) of dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) from changing owing to its bactericidal effects. The addition of BAC is a promising alternative method to mercury, which is currently the standard method of sterilization. Therefore, it is important to investigate its basic potential in advance for radiocarbon observations in seawater if mercury is prohibited. Since the …

  • A Simple Co 2 Extraction Method for Radiocarbon Analyses of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon in Water Samples Without a Carrier Gas

    Open Access•Hiroshi A Takahashi, Hiroko Handa et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 39

We developed a simple and cost-effective method for extracting carbon from dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in water samples without a carrier gas. This method only slightly modifies the existing vacuum line for CO 2 purification in radiocarbon research laboratories by connecting several reservoirs and traps. The procedure consists of repeated cycles of CO 2 extraction from water into the headspace of the reaction container, expansion of the extr…

  • Pathways for Escape of Magmatic Carbon Dioxide to Soil Air at Unzen Volcano, SW Japan

    Open Access•Hiroshi A Takahashi, Kohei Kazahaya et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•References: 6

Estimation of the magmatic contribution to soil air at Unzen Volcano, SW Japan, was carried out using carbon isotopes, both 14 C and 13 C, and a mixing model of isotopic mass balance in order to assess the spatial variation of magmatic influence from the volcano. The advantage of using soil air samples is that a wide range of gas sampling sites can be selected. Magmatic CO 2 contributed mostly in the eastern region from Unzen Volcano. The high ma…
