The Use and Perception of Reclaimed Group Labels for Lesbian Women and Gay Men
This research tests whether self-labelling with a derogatory or reclaimed label is perceived as an act of reclamation. A pilot study ( N = 102) identified English terms used to label lesbian women and gay men. The main study ( N = 276) used a between-groups vignette design in which participants read about a woman/man self-labelling with a descriptive (lesbian/gay), reclaimed (queer), or derogatory group (dyke/fag) label. We assessed perceptions o…
Gender diversity at academic conferences—the case of the International Communication Association
Gender diversity and the lack of women in leadership in academia have been issues of academic interest for decades. However, little is known about gender diversity at academic conferences as an essential aspect of academia. We investigated 86,719 contributions to International Communication Association (ICA) conferences over the past 18 years with regard to female and male authorship and how it changed following the introduction of childcare, dur…
Virtual reality as a psychotherapeutic tool
Virtual Reality (VR) has been defined as the use of technological interfaces to simulate the behaviour of 3D entities that interact in real time with a user immersed via sensorimotor channels. The aim of this study is to explore the possibilities and limitations in the use of VR systems in mental health treatment and research. We conducted a review of articles addressing the qualities of the current state of research regarding the efficacy and cl…
From serial reproduction to serial communication
We introduce and explore the potential of the serial communication method, a modification of the serial reproduction paradigm in which participants communicate their own thoughts. It affords participants more agency, more closely simulating real communication. We specifically examined the transmission of the focus of comparison in explanations of gender inequality, a consequential form of equivalency framing. Participants in Wave 1 (n = 86) read …
One Group's Advantage or Another Group's Disadvantage? How Comparative Framing Shapes Explanations of, and Reactions to, Workplace Gender Inequality
Gender inequality is usually described as women's disadvantage, only rarely as men's advantage. Moreover, it is often illustrated by metaphors such as the glass ceiling-an invisible barrier to women's career advancement-metaphors that often also focus on women's disadvantage. Two studies ( N = 228; N = 495) examined effects of these different ways of framing gender inequality. Participants read about gender inequality in leadership with a focus o…

Psychotherapy Researchers
The ethical practices of psychotherapy researchers were surveyed online. A total of 257 completed surveys were received from researchers worldwide. Eighty-nine percent of researchers admitted to at least one of the listed behaviors. The most common faults were related to excessive work demands: 44% of the respondents reported "inadequate monitoring of research projects due to work overload" and 37% reported "cutting corners in a hurry to complete…
Assessing Cross-National Equivalence of Measures of Xenophobia
When items eliciting attitudes or beliefs toward immigrants are used in cross-national research, equivalence of measurement across countries is a necessary prerequisite. Equivalence requires that respondents in all countries have at least ‘‘comparable’’ groups of immigrants in mind, although this might include different groups in terms of ethnicity, education, or legal status, for instance. The ideal situation that respondents have exactly the sa…
Ethical Behaviors of Latin American Psychotherapy Researchers
The ethical practices of psychotherapy researchers in Latin America were surveyed online. Of the 114 psychotherapy researchers to whom the survey was sent, 76 responded (67% response rate). Seventy-seven percent of the respondents had not received formal training in research ethics, yet 84% indicated that formal training is useful for the prevention of scientific misbehavior. Researchers admitted to various ethically questionable practices, the m…
