  • Changes in lake-sediment structure and composition caused by human impact

    Open Access•J-M Punning, Joan Boyle et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 1

This research uses a comparison of the sediment record of Lake Martiska (NE Estonia) with well-documented historical changes in human impact to identify the factors dominantly affecting the sediment lithological composition, and the accumulation of heavy metals and other microelements into the sediments. To this end, comprehensive lithological-geochemical studies of the upper sediment were undertaken in 1986 and repeated in 2003 and 2005. Oil sha…

  • Human impact on the history of Lake Nômmejärv, NE Estonia

    Open Access•J-M Punning, Joan Boyle et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 1

A comprehensive geochemical and palaeobotanical study of the lacustrine sediments of Lake Nôm mejärv from industrialized NE Estonia establishes the links between the nature and intensity of human activities and their impacts on the state and structure of the lake ecosystem. In cores of sediment formed during the last century, five zones can be distinguished, each reflecting a pattern of human activity and characterized by a particular diatom comm…

  • Application of 14 C Data for the Estimation of Sphagnum Peat Increment in Estonian Ombrotrophic Mires

    Open Access•J-M Punning, Tiiu Koff•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•References: 6

We calculated apparent increment values based on the radiocarbon dates of 21 Estonian ombrotrophic mires (raised bogs). For short periods, the values vary significantly, but the integrated increment for the total complex of ombrotrophic peat shows a strong increasing tendency with decreasing peat age. This is probably due to the decay of accumulated organic matter. Our hypotheses concern the mechanisms of decay and methods for increasing the reli…

  • Use of the 210Pb method in studies of the development and human-impact history of some Estonian lakes

    Open Access•M Varvas, J-M Punning•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1993

Sediment cores from six lakes of Kurtna Lake District (northeast Estonia) were investigated using 210 Pb and loss-on-ignition techniques. Most of the cores were also analysed for microelement concentrations. These investigations show that since the early 1950s, when the processing of oil-shale in the study area began, the emission of fly ash to the atmosphere rapidly increased; moreover, some lakes have received waste water from mining operations…

  • Tartu Radiocarbon Dates IV

    Open Access•E Ilves, J-M Punning et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1970•Cited by: 4•References: 1

The following list includes C 14 dates and deals with the results of the methodological investigations carried out at the Geobiochemical Laboratory of the Institute of Zoology and Botany of the Academy of Sciences of the Estonian SSR in 1967–1968

  • Tartu Radiocarbon Dates III

    Open Access•J M Punning, J-M Punning et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1968•Cited by: 2•References: 1

In dating the samples reported here as well as in calculating their ages, the same equipment and method of processing and counting were used which were previously described in Tartu I and II
