  • Duration of Tell Settlements at Four Prehistoric Sites in Hungary

Open Access•Ede Hertelendi, Eava Svingor et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•References: 6

The chief objective of this paper is to improve our understanding of the Neolithic in eastern Hungary using absolute chronological data. To accomplish this we calibrated new measurements as well as previously published dates. The up-to-date, standardized evaluation of 147 calibrated measurements showed temporal overlaps between archaeological cultures defined on the basis of ceramic styles. The average timespan of tell settlements of 285 yr was o…

  • C Measurements at PWR-Type Nuclear Power Plants in Three Middle European Countries

Open Access•György Uchrin, Ede Hertelendi et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Cited by: 4•References: 13

Regular 14 C sampling of discharged air began in 1988 at Paks Nuclear Power Plant (NPP), Hungary, and in 1991 at NPPs in Krsko, Slovenia and Bohunice, Slovakia. Monitoring of 14 C discharges is carried out at all NPPs with similar differential samplers continuously collecting 14 C in the form of 14 CO 2 and 14 C n H m . The main results of airborne discharge monitoring are as follows: 14 C activity concentration varied roughly within a factor of …

  • Reconstruction of Microenvironmental Changes in the Kopasz Hill Loess Area at Tokaj (Hungary) Between 15 and 70 ka BP

    Open Access•Pál Sümegi, Ede Hertelendi•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•Cited by: 4•References: 22

We collected 11 Kopasz Hill loess profiles for paleoecological and geochronological analysis. The loess accumulation and development formed during the last (Weichselian) glacial period between 70 and 15 ka bp. We found that the majority of the loess profiles were composed of three typical loess strata and two well-developed paleosol horizons. Based on vertebrate remains, the lowest loess layer formed between 70–50 ka bp, during the first cool and…

  • Concentration of Radiocarbon and Its Chemical Forms in Gaseous Effluents, Environmental Air, Nuclear Waste and Primary Water of a Pressurized Water Reactor Power Plant in Hungary

Open Access•Mihály Veres, Ede Hertelendi et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Cited by: 13•References: 15

We measured airborne releases of 14 C from the Paks Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). Two continuous stack samplers collect 14 C in 14 CO 2 and 14 C n H m chemical forms. 14 C activities were measured using two techniques; environmental air samples of lower activities were analyzed by proportional counting, stack samples were measured by liquid scintillation counting. 14 C concentration of air in the stack varies between …

  • Radiocarbon Concentration and Origin of Thermal Karst Waters in the Region of the Bükk Mountains, Northeastern Hungary

Open Access•Ede Hertelendi, Mihály Veres et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Cited by: 1•References: 3

Karst springs are abundant in Hungary, and many are thermal (temperatures >30°). As thermal springs are a significant part of Hungary's water resources, it is important to quantify their travel times in the karst systems. Thus, we chose to measure T and δ 18 O in the water and δ 13 C and 14 C in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in water from 50 thermal and nonthermal springs and wells in the Bükk Mountains, northeastern Hungary. Environmental iso…

  • Geochronologic and Paleoclimatic Characterization of Quaternary Sediments in the Great Hungarian Plain

Open Access•Ede Hertelendi, Pál Sümegi et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 11•References: 3

We reconstructed the climate of the Great Hungarian Plain between the years, 7–32 ka BP using a malacothermometer method. The reconstruction is based on seven Gastropoda taxa, for which optimal temperature and tolerance ranges have been determined. The temporal scales of the malacofaunal levels were calibrated with radiocarbon data. We compared our paleotemperature values with the temperature values of existing climatic curves and found the same …

  • Radiocarbon Chronology of Late Neolithic Settlements in the Tisza-Maros Region, Hungary

    Open Access•Ede Hertelendi, Ferenc Horváth•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 5•References: 4

We investigated chronological questions of five Late Neolithic settlements in the Hungarian Tisza-Maros region. Fifty new radiocarbon dates provide an internal chronology for the developmental phases of the tell settlements, and place them into the wider framework of the southeastern European Neolithic. An example is presented of how a unique type of stratigraphic excavation helps the interpretation of radiocarbon data, which are in contradiction…

  • Sources of Random Error in the Debrecen Radiocarbon Laboratory

    Open Access•Ede Hertelendi•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1990•Cited by: 5•References: 5

A new high-pressure methane-filled counter system for 14 C dating was installed in 1986 when the first stage of the International Collaborative Study (ICS) started. Random errors in the new measuring system and in the process of chemical pretreatment and preparation were checked during the three years of intercomparison. Results show that the most important source of error in our laboratory is gas contamination. This causes variation of the count…

  • C Release in Various Chemical Forms With Gaseous Effluents From the Paks Nuclear Power Plant

Ede Hertelendi, György Uchrin et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Cited by: 14

We present results of airborne 14 C emission measurements from the Paks PWR nuclear power plant. Long-term release of 14 C in the form of carbon dioxide or carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons were simultaneously measured. The results of internal gas-proportional and liquid scintillation counting agree well with theoretical assessments of 14 C releases from pressurized water reactors. The mean value of the 14 C concentration in discharged air is 130B…

  • A Counter System for High-Precision 14C Dating

Ede Hertelendi, Eva Csongor et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Cited by: 24

A multicounter radiocarbon dating system was developed applying the experiences of the previous one-channel low-level counting facility. The counter system consists of nine electrolytic copper proportional counters of identical diameters with sensitive volumes of 0.35–0.7dm 3 and filled with either methane at high pressure (6 bar) or CO 2 at 1 bar. The inner counters are surrounded by an anticoincidence shield consisting of five multiwire proport…
