Radiocarbon Dating of Legacy Music Instrument Collections
Although radiocarbon ( 14 C) dating is commonly used for archeological music instruments, little research has been conducted on modern instruments (16th–19th centuries). New technology, based on the Mini Carbon Dating System (MICADAS), enables some of the recurring challenges (e.g. sampling size) to be circumvented and paves the way for a new field of investigation. We here address the Indian instrumentarium, about which very little is known. We …

C in Urban Secondary Carbonate Deposits
Secondary carbonate deposits (similar to speleothems) in urban undergrounds, have been recently highlighted as powerful archives for reconstruction of the historical anthropogenic imprint on the environment. The precise chronology of these secondary carbonate deposits is a key issue for the accurate time reconstruction of environmental conditions. We present three 14 C data sets for urban speleothem-like deposits that developed in contrasted man …
Isotopic Signature (δ 13 C, ∆ 14 C) of DIC in Sediment Pore Waters
A better understanding of the dynamics of different particulate organic matter (OM) pools in the coastal carbon budget is a key issue for quantifying the role of the coastal ocean in the global carbon cycle. To elucidate the benthic component of this carbon cycle at the land-sea interface, we investigated the carbon isotope signatures (δ 13 C and ∆ 14 C) in the sediment pore waters dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) in addition to the sediment OM t…
Temporal and Spatial Variations of Freshwater Reservoir Ages in the Loire River Watershed
In order to map the freshwater reservoir effect (FRE) variability of the Loire River and its tributaries, spatial and temporal carbon isotope ( 13 C and 14 C) analyses of the dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) were conducted. Sites were selected to represent the diversity of geological settings, soil type, and land use. Results show a large spatial variability of 14 C FRE ranging between 135 and 2251±30 yr, objectively correlated to DIC contents an…
Dating French and Spanish Prehistoric Decorated Caves in Their Archaeological Contexts
The Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) research program on prehistoric art conducts chronological studies of parietal representations with their associated archaeological context. This multidisciplinary approach provides chronological arguments about the creation period of parietal representations. This article presents chronological investigations carried out in several decorated caves in France (La Grande Grotte, La…
AMS Radiocarbon Dating of Bones at LSCE
In this paper, we explain our routine pretreatment of bone for radiocarbon dating by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), based on the specific reaction between amino acids and ninhydrin described by Nelson (1991). The values and uncertainties of the total system background are presented as a function of the carbon sample mass and the reliability of this method is discussed
Development of a Semi-Automated System for Routine Preparation of Carbonate Samples
We constructed a semi-automated system to transform carbonate samples to CO 2 , as a means to increase sample-processing capacity. The physico-chemical process includes hydrolysis of carbonate, quantification of the mass of carbon and CO 2 collection in a glass ampoule. The system is computer-controlled and monitored, and all the data are stored. A single run of five consecutive samples requires about 3.5 hours. Measurements of 14 C concentration…
Radiocarbon AMS Dates for Paleolithic Cave Paintings
Advances in radiocarbon dating by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) have made it possible to date prehistoric cave paintings by sampling the pigment itself instead of relying on dates derived from miscellaneous prehistoric remains recovered in the vicinity of the paintings. The work at the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l'Environnement (LSCE) concentrated on prehistoric charcoal cave paintings from southern France and northern Spain. …
