Comparison of Independent Δ 14 CO 2 Records at Point Barrow, Alaska
Two independent programs have collected and analyzed atmospheric CO 2 samples from Point Barrow, Alaska, for radiocarbon content (Δ 14 C) over the period 2003–2007. In one program, flask collection, stable isotope analysis, and CO 2 extraction are performed by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography's CO 2 Program and CO 2 is graphitized and measured by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. In the other pr…
Sources and Transformation of Dissolved Organic Carbon in the Harp Lake Forested Catchment: The Role of Soils
The 14 C content of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) in streams, soil water and groundwaters in the Harp Lake catchment in Ontario, Canada, reflect a mixture of DOC sources, including both contemporary plant material and 14 C-depleted soil organic matter. The concentration and isotopic content of DOC in streams is highly variable, reflecting the complex flow path of the source water entering the streams. The characteristics of groundwater DOC are s…
Evaluating Dissolved Inorganic Carbon Cycling in a Forested Lake Watershed Using Carbon Isotopes
Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) is the main acid buffer in forested lake watersheds in Canada. We used carbon isotopes ( 13 C, 14 C) to evaluate the production and cycling of DIC in an acid-sensitive lake watershed of the Precambrian Shield. Soil CO 2 , groundwater and stream DIC were characterized chemically and isotopically. Soil CO 2 concentration profiles reflect both changes in production and in losses due to diffusion. δ 13 C soil CO 2 pro…
Progress in AMS Measurements at the LLNL Spectrometer
We report on the present status of the Lawrence Livermore AMS spectrometer, including sample throughput and progress towards routine 1% measurement capability for 14 C, first results on other isotopes and experience with a multisample high-intensity ion source
AMS 14C Measurements of Fractionated Soil Organic Matter: An Approach to Deciphering the Soil Carbon Cycle
14 C measurements are reported for fractionated soil organic matter from a genetic soil sequence which was sampled several times during the period of atmospheric nuclear weapons testing. Fractionation of the soils by density followed by acid hydrolysis was successful in separating the organic matter into components with mean residence times for carbon ranging from 5 to 20 years (low density fraction) to several thousand years (residue after acid …
