Radiocarbon Dating of Single Compounds Isolated from Pottery Cooking Vessel Residues
We have developed and demonstrated a practical methodology for dating specific compounds (and octade-canoic or stearic acid—C 18:0 —in particular) from the lipid material surviving in archaeological cooking pots. Such compounds may be extracted from about 10 g of cooking potsherd, and, after derivatization, can be purified by gas chromatography. To obtain sufficient material for precise dating repetitive, accumulating, GC separation is necessary.…
Developments in Sample Combustion to Carbon Dioxide, and in the Oxford AMS Carbon Dioxide Ion Source System
We describe the operation of a commercial system as modified for preparation of CO 2 for the CO 2 source. AMS samples are automatically combusted in a CHN analyzer, and stable isotope measurements are made on line. We describe the performance of this equipment, with reference to yield, sample contamination, memory effect, accuracy of isotope measurement, convenience and cost. We discuss the current status of dating using the CO 2 source. This is …
Routine AMS Dating of Bone and Shell Proteins
14 C dating of bone has been unreliable in comparison with more stable materials such as wood or charcoal. Attempts have been made to use various components or fractions isolated from the raw bone sample; these include dilute acid soluble, dilute acid insoluble, collagen, and gelatin, as well as alkali soluble and insoluble fractions of burned bone, and carbonate or apatite fractions of organic-poor bone. All of these fractions have yielded usefu…
