  • More Rapid 14 C Excursions in the Tree-Ring Record

    Open Access•A J T Jull, Irina Panyushkina et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•Cited by: 16•References: 57

Two radiocarbon ( 14 C) excursions are caused by an increase of incoming cosmic rays on a short time scale found in the Late Holocene (AD 774–775 and AD 993–994), which are widely explained as due to extreme solar proton events (SPE). In addition, a larger event has also been reported at 5480 BC (Miyake et al. 2017a), which is attributed to a special mode of a grand solar minimum, as well as another at 660 BC (Park et al. 2017). Clearly, other ev…

  • Deglacial Hydroclimate of Midcontinental North America

    Open Access•Steven L Voelker, Michael C Stambaugh et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2015

During the last deglaciation temperatures over midcontinental North America warmed dramatically through the Bølling-Allerød, underwent a cool period associated with the Younger-Dryas and then reverted to warmer, near modern temperatures during the early Holocene. However, paleo proxy records of the hydroclimate of this period have presented divergent evidence. We reconstruct summer relative humidity (RH) across the last deglacial period using a m…

  • Radiocarbon and Tree-Ring Dates of the Bes-Shatyr #3 Saka Kurgan in the Semirechiye, Kazakhstan

Irina Panyushkina, Fedor Grigoriev et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This study employs tree-ring crossdating and radiocarbon measurements to determine the precise calendar age of the Bes-Shatyr Saka necropolis (43°47′N, 81°21′E) built for wealthy tribe leaders in the Ili River Valley (Semirechiye), southern Kazakhstan. We developed a 218-yr tree-ring chronology and a highly resolved sequence of 14 C from timbers of Bes-Shatyr kurgan #3. A 4-decadal-point 14 C wiggle dates the Bes-Shatyr necropolis to 600 cal BC. …

  • Floating Larch Tree-Ring Chronologies from Archaeological Timbers in the Russian Altai Between about 800 BC and AD 800

Open Access•Irina Panyushkina, Igor Sljusarenko et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 5•References: 3

We obtained over 200 archaeological wood specimens from the southeastern part of the Altai Mountains (Russia) to establish accurate calendar dates of the timbers using both radiocarbon and tree-ring analyses. Most timbers came from small and elite tombs of the Pazyryk culture (Siberian Scythians of the Iron Age period). Timbers from Hun-Sarmatian and Turk times (1st millennium AD) were studied for the first time. Three floating tree-ring width ch…
