A higher moisture level in the early Holocene in northern Mongolia as evidenced from sediment records of Lake Hovsgol and Lake Erhel
Estimation of aeolian dust flux on Cheju Island, Korea, during the Mid- to Late Holocene
Climate change and human impact on the Song Hong (Red River) Delta, Vietnam, during the Holocene
Eolian quartz flux variations in Cheju Island, Korea, during the last 6500 yr and a possible Sun–monsoon linkage
We have obtained a high-resolution sedimentary record covering the last 6500 yr from a maar in Cheju Island, Korea, in order to reconstruct the history of variations in the eolian quartz flux (EQF) and hence Asian dust. The long-term variation of EQF reveals three intervals: a period of high EQF (4000–2000 cal yr B.P.) and two periods of low EQF (6500–4000 cal yr B.P. and 2000 cal yr B.P. to present), which have been affected by the East Asian mo…
Variability of Monsoon Climate in East Asia at the End of the Last Glaciation
High-resolution paleomonsoon proxy records from peat and eolian sand–paleosol sequences at the desert–loess transition zone in China denote a rapid oscillation from cold–dry conditions (11,200–10,600 14 C yr B.P.) to cool–humid conditions (10,600–10,200 14 C yr B.P.), followed by a return to cold–dry climate (10,200–10,000 14 C yr B.P.). Variations in precipitation proxies suggest that significant climatic variability occurred in monsoonal easter…
Late Holocene Sea-Level Change on Rota and Guam, Mariana Islands, and Its Constraint on Geophysical Predictions
Holocene emergent reefs and notches are well distributed on Rota and Guam. Relative sea-level changes at these islands are reconstructed based on geomorphological observations and borings on present and emergent reefs, together with 54 radiocarbon dates. Sea level rose gradually to a maximum of 1.8 m between 6000 and 4200 yr B.P. and reached its highest level by 4200 yr B.P. on both islands. After 3200 yr B.P. abrupt uplift caused emergence of th…
A Batch Preparation Method for Graphite Targets With Low Background for AMS 14 C Measurements
We have developed a method of graphitization from CO 2 samples for accurate 14 C measurements by accelerator mass spectrometry. Our batch method, using a sealed Vycor tube, reduces the risk of contamination during graphitization and makes it possible to prepare many samples in a short time (typically 20 samples per day)
Measurement of 14 C Concentrations of Stratospheric CO 2 by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
In order to measure the concentrations of anthropogenically influenced gases in the stratosphere, we have collected air samples from the lower stratosphere since 1985, by a balloon-borne cryogenic sampling method, developed at the Institute of Space and Astronautical Science (ISAS). Air samples of ≃16 liters at STP were collected in the stratosphere at altitudes from 18.6 to 30.4 km, over the northeastern part of Japan (39.5°N, 139–142°E), on 1 S…
Evidence for a Holocene High Sea-Level Stand, Vanua Levu, Fiji
Two distinct elevations of emerged notches can be recognized on the southeastern coast of Vanua Levu: the higher notch is +2.22 to +3.30 m above low-tide level and the lower +1.52 to +1.65 m above low-tide level. Many emerged Holocene corals encrust higher notch floors and benches or occur as microatolls and from these radiocarbon ages ranging from 6000 to 3400 yr B.P. were obtained. The higher notches are significantly higher than present high-t…
III. Environmental Conditions of Three Representative Villages in Central Java
Frameworkof the Island of Java It is a matter of common practiee to subdivide the island of Jttva into threc geographical subregions, namely, "Jest, Central and East Java. The political and adininistrative sub- regions follow this cons, entional demarcation, Although we perccivc that the dryness iti landscape increases as we go farther eastwards on thc islund, thc climatic differencc betweenWest and East Java bears no significtLnc,e.According to th…

Fai" and "Bo" Type Rice Culture on the Marginal Plain of Thailand
Map published in 1910 suggests that the marginal zone of the Chao Phraya valley has been occupied by two types of rice culture which originated from two regions having different cultural complexes; one is "Fai" type rice culture origination in intermountain basins to the north, and the other is "Bo" type rice culture possibly connected with the Khorat plateau. The former is characterized by "Fai" (dam) and transplanting, and the latter by "Bo" (f…
