  • Insights into Holocene megafauna survival and extinction in southeastern Brazil from new AMS 14 C dates

Open Access•Alex Hubbe, Mark Hubbe et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

The extinction of late Quaternary megafauna in South America has been extensively debated in past decades. The majority of the hypotheses explaining this phenomenon argue that the extinction was the result of human activities, environmental changes, or even synergism between the two. Although still limited, a good chronological framework is imperative to discuss the plausibility of the available hypotheses. Here we present six new direct AMS 14 C…

  • Geomorphological map of the Serra da Bodoquena karst, west-central Brazil

Open Access•William Sallun Filho, Ivo Karmann•ARTICLE•Journal of Maps•2007

Please click here to download the map associated with this article. The Serra da Bodoquena is a karst area situated on the southern edge of the Pantanal wetland region in the states of Mato Grosso and Mato Grosso do Sul, central-western Brazil. Morphological analysis, on a scale of 1:60,000, made it possible to identify such various karst features as dolines, caves, sinks and springs, as well as karst cones and corridors, among others, compartmen…

  • New Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS) Ages Suggest a Revision of the Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) Middle Holocene Dates Obtained for a Toxodon platensis (Toxodontidae, Mammalia) from Southeast Braz…

In a paper published in Applied Radiation and Isotopes , Baffa et al. (2000) reported a Middle Holocene date (∼6.5 kyr BP) for a specimen of Toxodon platensis from Ribeira do Iguape, southeast Brazil, using the emergent technique electron spin resonance (ESR). Through an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) procedure applied on tooth collagen, we provide a new set of dates to test the accuracy of the ages generated by ESR. We obtained 2 dates more…

  • Paleoclimate Changes during the last 100,000 yr from a Record in the Brazilian Atlantic Rainforest region and Interhemispheric Comparison

    Open Access•Marie-Pierre Ledru, D-D Rousseau et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

A long terrestrial record, Colônia CO-3, from the Atlantic rainforest region in Brazil (23°52′S, 46°42′20 ʺW, 900 m a.s.l.) registrates variations in the forest expansion during the last 100,000 yr. The 780-cm depth core was analyzed at 2-cm intervals and arboreal pollen frequencies were compared to nearby speleothem stable isotope records and neighboring marine records from the tropical Atlantic. To evaluate regional versus global climate forcin…
