Holocene climatic changes and environmental history of Iturup Island, Kurile Islands, northwestern Pacific
The study of Holocene deposits on Iturup Island is very important for understanding palaeolandscape changes on the island. It is separated by deep straits from the neighbouring islands and was isolated during the last glacial maximum. Landscape changes over the last 40000 years and the role of refugia on vegetation development are discussed. Changes in natural processes in this region were controlled both by global climatic changes and by regiona…
Radiocarbon Studies of Peat Bogs
We have undertaken extensive programs of natural radiocarbon measurement to date the evidence for various events buried in peat bogs. Two case studies are described here: 1) the chronological reconstruction of South Kamchatka volcanic eruptions and, 2) investigation of multi-layered archeological sites in the Upper Volga River Basin. Studies of sample composition and peat taphonomy allowed us to determine the source of 14 C age deviations and to …
Middle-and late-Holocene environments and vegetation history of Kunashir Island, Kurile Islands, northwestern Pacific
Natural middle-and late-Holocene environmental development of Kunashiri Island reflects global climatic changes and the migration of warm and cold currents. Dry and cool climate changed to warm and moist about 7000–6500 BP, later than on Hokkaido Island. At this time Kuroshio Current system became more active. On Kunashir Island birch assemblages were replaced by cool-temperate broadleaf forests in the south and mixed coniferous/broadleaf forests…
Younger Dryas pollen records from central and southern Yakutia
Younger Dryas pollen records from Sverdrup Island (Kara Sea)
Peculiarities of radiocarbon chronology of Younger Dryas deposits in the Taymyr Peninsula
C Dating of Late Pleistocene–Holocene Events on Kunashir Island, Kuril Islands
Kunashir Island is a very important site for paleoenvironmental reconstructions. Until recently, very little information on Quaternary deposits was available. We studied the environmental evolution of this oceanic island under the influence of geomorphological processes, volcanism and strong marine currents. This paper presents new data that allow a detailed reconstruction of the environmental development of Kunashir Island during the Late Pleist…
C Ages of Tephra Layers from the Holocene Deposits of Kunashir Island (Russian Far East)
Holocene deposits from the central and southern regions of the Kunashir Island contain tephra from 12 volcanic eruptions (Kn1–12). We studied radiocarbon data, mineralogical composition, and distribution of the tephra layers in different Holocene facies. The main sources of the Holocene tephra samples were the volcanoes of Hokkaido Island. The distribution of ash layers on Kunashir Island allows us to estimate their direction. Ash layers can be r…
Radiocarbon Dating and Tephrochronology in Kamchatka
We discuss results of 14 C dates obtained from areas of young volcanoes in Kamchatka. We apply these dates to reconstructing regional volcanic activity during the Holocene
Validity of radiocarbon dating in regions of active volcanism in Kamchatka
Tephra of the largest prehistoric Holocene volcanic eruptions in Kamchatka
