On the 14 C and 39 Ar Distribution in the Central Arctic Ocean
We present ΔA 14 C and 39 Ar data collected in the Nansen, Amundsen and Makarov basins during two expeditions to the central Arctic Ocean (RV Polarstern cruises ARK IV/3, 1987 and ARK VIII/3, 1991). The data are used, together with published Δ 14 C values, to describe the distribution of Δ 14 C in all major basins of the Arctic Ocean (Nansen, Amundsen, Makarov and Canada Basins), as well as the 39 Ar distribution in the Nansen Basin and the deep …
Gamma Flux in 14 C Laboratories
An informal collaborative group of radiocarbon dating laboratories, the Low-Level Club, has been established to measure the gamma radiation flux and to test the efficiency of the anticoincidence counting system in laboratories with a NaI detector unit. The detector will record gamma radiation from cosmogenic nuclides, muons and secondary γ radiation formed in the passive shield by charged cosmic-ray particles. We present here the first phase of t…
Laser Resonance Ionization Mass Spectrometry for Krypton-81 Analysis
A new laser-based analytical technique is described for isotope selective noble gas atom counting. The method has been used to detect 81 Kr atoms in a groundwater sample
Background Measurements with Different Shielding and Anticoincidence Systems
Extremely low background count rates are a necessary condition for both the measurement of 39 Ar concentrations in ground and ocean water and of 14 C activities in small samples using gas proportional counting techniques. A systematic comparison of the performance of three different designs of shielding systems in four different installations has been made. Background values of selected gas proportional counters were measured, compared and separa…
Low-Level Gas Proportional Counting in An Underground Laboratory
Results of measurements in an underground laboratory, 70m of water equivalent below surface, are given. Background values of proportional gas counters with volumes between 16cc and 1.5L are lower by a factor of 2—4.5 compared to the values in the previously used laboratory (7m w.e.). High counting gas pressures, up to 5 at CH 4 and up to 36 at P-10, enable the use of relatively small counters with correspondingly small background contributions fr…
