Radiocarbon and Stable Isotopes as Groundwater Tracers in the Danube River Basin of SW Slovakia
Horizontal and vertical variations in the distribution of 14 C, δ 13 C, δ 18 O, and δ 2 H in groundwater of Žitný Island (Rye Island) have been studied. Žitný Island, situated in the Danube River Basin, is the largest island in Europe that is formed by interconnected rivers. It is also the largest groundwater reservoir in central Europe (∼10 10 m 3 of drinking water). The δ 2 H vs. δ 18 O plot made from collected groundwater samples showed an agr…
Theoretical and Experimental Aspects of Solar Flares Manifestation in Radiocarbon Abundance in Tree Rings
We describe our method of determining solar cosmic-ray flux and spectrum in the past, based on the comparison of different cosmogenic isotopes. For the period, AD 1781–1950, we have detected several intervals with a high probability of powerful solar flares
C Gas Counting
Reviewed here are developments in low background proportional counters and chambers used for low-level internal gas counting of 14 C. I have studied the influence of counter geometry and the nature of the gas filling on counter characteristics and describe in detail operational characteristics of multi-element proportional chambers. I also discuss detector developments for ultra-low-level gas counting based on a time projection chamber. My observ…
Anthropogenic 14C Variations in Atmospheric CO2 and Wines
As an extension of the Bratislava – Tbilisi collaboration, thermonuclear bomb-produced 14 C variations in atmospheric CO 2 of Bratislava (1967–1987) and in annually produced Georgian wines (1950–1987) are discussed. 14 C produced in bomb tests performed in the atmosphere has considerably modified the natural 14 C levels in the atmosphere and biosphere. Measurements of 14 C in monthly samples of atmospheric CO 2 show typical seasonal variations wi…
A Cyclogram Analysis of the Bratislava 14C Tree-Ring Record During the Last Century
Radiocarbon variations in dated tree-ring samples represent an important tool for the study of the history of solar activity and sun-earth relationships. From this point of view, an investigation of the 11-year radiocarbon cycle is very important. Our cyclogram analysis of the Δ 14 C record in tree-ring samples during the last century has confirmed previous results obtained by conventional harmonic analysis, eg, the average amplitude of 2, the ph…
Anthropogenic Radiocarbon
14 C is one of the most important anthropogenic radionuclides released to the environment by human activities. Weapon testing raised the 14 C concentration in the atmosphere and biosphere to +100% above the natural level. This excess of atmospheric C at present decreases with a half-life of ca 7 years. Recently, a new source of artificially produced 14 C in nuclear reactors has become important. Since 1967, the Bratislava 14 C laboratory has been…
Short-Term Variations in Radiocarbon Concentration with the 11-Year Solar Cycle
Previous investigations on short-term 14 C variations in tree rings are compared with 14 C measurements in wine samples. The comparison is made for 4 solar cycles (1903–1944) with the same method of statistical evaluation of measured results. The average amplitude of Δ 14 C variations as observed by various authors in tree-ring samples is ca 2 ± 1 ‰; however, wine samples show an average amplitude of 4.3 ± 1.6 ‰. The anticorrelation dependence of…
