  • A preliminary study on the influence of cooking on the C and N isotopic composition of multiple organic fractions of fish (mackerel and haddock)

Open Access•Ricardo Fernandes, John Meadows et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2014•Cited by: 14•References: 7

  • Dating Late Paleolithic Harpoons from Lake Lubāns, Latvia

John Meadows, Berit V Eriksen et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2014•Cited by: 3•References: 15

Over 3000 prehistoric bone and antler artifacts, collected in the late 1930s from the former lakebed of Lake Lubāns, are held by the National History Museum of Latvia. This collection is remarkable not only as one of the largest known assemblages of bone implements in northern Europe, but also in terms of diversity of forms. The most elaborately worked objects include harpoons, often with two rows of barbs and spade-shaped bases, which are believ…

  • A Freshwater Lake Saga

Open Access•Ricardo Fernandes, Alexander Dreves et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 10•References: 64

Recently, several case studies have demonstrated the presence of human radiocarbon dietary reservoir effects in inland contexts. Freshwater reservoir effects present a high degree of variability, making it difficult to define local reservoir effect reference values necessary for correcting chronologies based on 14 C dating of human bone material. Here, we investigate the hypothesis that 14 C ages of edible freshwater species are delimited by the …

  • Dating Bulk Sediments from Limnic Deposits Using a Grain-Size Approach

Open Access•Leo Rothacker, Alexander Dreves et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 17

Radiocarbon measurements on bulk subaqueous sediments typically provide ages significantly older than actual time of deposition. This is generally caused by the presence of reworked organic compounds, which are depleted in 14 C. To explore this issue of age heterogeneity, we collected 4 organic-rich samples from varying depths in a lake sediment core at the Gemündener Maar (Eifel, Germany), a lake of volcanic origin. We divided each sample into 5…
