Variations in Soil CO 2 Concentrations and Isotopic Values in a Semi-Arid Region Due to Biotic and Abiotic Processes in the Unsaturated Zone
A study of CO 2 in soil gas was conducted in a bare plot in the unsaturated zone (USZ) of Yatir Forest, northern Negev, Israel. In 2006, 6 tubes for sampling of soil gas were inserted into the USZ to depths of 30, 60, 90, 120, 200, and 240 cm. Profiles of soil gas in the USZ were collected from the tubes 5 times between October 2007 and September 2008. Measurements of the collected profiles of soil gas were of CO 2 (ppm), δ 13 C (′), and Δ 14 C (…
Dating of Groundwater Recharge in Two Small Adjacent Aquifers in Israel and Their Initial 14 C Activities
Radiocarbon and tritium determinations were carried out in 2 adjacent small aquifers in Israel. These aquifers have small storage capacities and good hydraulic properties. Darcy calculations suggest that the aquifers contain young waters, ≃50 yr in age. 14 C concentrations in the Pleistocene aquifer are between 23–60 pMC, with the lowest activity related to contamination by petroleum-based fertilizers with no 14 C. 14 C concentrations in the Jude…

Quantitative Extraction of Dissolved Inorganic Carbon (as CO 2 ) and Water by Vacuum Distillation from Sediments of the Unsaturated Zone for Carbon Isotope Analysis ( 13 C and 14 C)
Vacuum distillation is shown to be useful for the quantitative extraction of dissolved inorganic carbon (as CO 2 ) and water from sediments of the unsaturated zone in the Coastal Aquifer of Israel. Several tests of vacuum extractions from tap water and sediments are presented, including standard addition, which show that the distillation procedure is quantitative, with minimal or no carbon isotope fractionation. The optimal temperature of the sed…
Further Attempts at Dating the Palynological Sequence of the Hula L07 Core, Upper Jordan Valley, Israel
The palynological sequence of the Hula L07 core was previously correlated with the global oxygen isotope stages 3–5, based on a radiocarbon age determination and comparison with other Levantine paleoclimatological curves. An attempt was made to validate this correlation with Th/U dating. Unlike typical European peat, which is acidic, the soil pH of the Hula peat is mildly basic. Not only does this contribute to the oxidation of palynomorphs, but …
The Source of the Yarkon Springs, Israel
Radiocarbon and tritium analyses are used to show that the accepted conceptual hydrological model of the Yarkon-Taninim aquifer is untenable. The conventional model would have the groundwater flow in the carbonate Judea Group aquifer from the Beer Sheva region in the south to discharge at the Yarkon springs. Moreover, the conventional model considers the Judea Group aquifer to be a single hydrological entity. However, analysis of the Yarkon sprin…
Major Recent Tectonic Uplift in Iskenderun Bay, Turkey
Radiocarbon dating was carried out in the sediment profiles of four marine sediment cores taken from Iskenderun Bay, Turkey. The bay is quite shallow in the present day, and a previous tectonic study had considered that the bay floor might have been subsiding. However, this cannot be so, for the 14 C ages would thereby lead to the apparent paradox of normal marine sedimentation having taken place during times when glacio-eustatic sea level loweri…
Obsidian provenancing and magmatic fractionation in central oregon
In many instances, geologically distinct obsidian flows located within even a relatively small geographic area can be uniquely identified by their chemical composition. This happens to be true for several obsidian sources from central Oregon. Internally each obsidian locality is chemically homogeneous, but the obsidian rocks from different collection sites exhibit chemical differences. Based on the geochemical variations and on K/ Ar dating of th…
Age and Paleoclimatic Implications of the Bet Shean Travertines
From 41,000 to over 22,000 yr B.P., a massive and areally extensive spring travertine was deposited in the Bet Shean Valley, Israel. This travertine is coeval with the Ami'az Member of the Lisan Formation which represents a high lake stand. The travertine deposition is contemporaneous with a more active hydrologic regime associated with wetter conditions in the arid zones of the southern Levant adjacent to southern Israel. These wetter conditions…
Paleoclimatic Implications of U-Series Dates for Lake Sediments and Travertines in the Arava Rift Valley, Israel
The Sayif travertines and lacustrine limestones cropping out in the northern Arava Valley, a region of extreme aridity, have been dated by the 230 Th/ 234 U disequilibrium method. The consistency between the stratigraphic position and the apparent ages at each of the sampling sites strongly supports the reliability of the ages. Most of the ages fall within two clusters that are coincident with ages representative of oceanic oxygen-isotope stages …
