  • Radiocarbon Dating on Echo Micadas, Lsce, Gif-Sur-Yvette, France

Open Access•Christine Hatté, Maurice Arnold et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•Cited by: 2•References: 35

The Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE) has operated a radiocarbon dating laboratory for almost 70 years. It has evolved from a traditional ß-decay counting to an accelerator mass spectrometry facility. In 2015, the LSCE received a major upgrade with the installation of a MICADAS. This evolution required adjustments in sample preparation to match the new capability to date samples as small as a few tens of μgC. We summ…

    Open Access•François Thil, Nadine Tisnerat-Laborde et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 10

In 2015, a new accelerator mass spectrometry facility (AMS), the ECHoMICADAS (Environnement, Climat, Homme, MIni CArbon DAting System), was installed in the Laboratoire des Sciences du Climat et de l’Environnement (LSCE). Equipped with a hybrid source, it allows the analysis of solid or gas samples for 14 C measurement. Here, we summarize the equipment surrounding the Gas Interface System (GIS), namely the elemental analyzer (EA), the carbonate h…

  • Reservoir Ages in the Western Tropical North Atlantic from One Coral off Martinique Island (Lesser Antilles)

Open Access•Martine Paterne, Nathalie Feuillet et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2018•References: 58

Sea surface reservoir ages (R) are reported from radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements of the annual growth bands of coral Siderastrea siderea collected on the Atlantic coast off Martinique Island, in the Lesser Antilles volcanic arc. Mean values of R are similar between 1835 and 1845 during pre-anthropogenic times at 385±30 yr and between 1895 and 1905 at 382±20 yr when there was a huge eruption from the Montagne Pelée volcano in 1902–1903. Limited 1…

Georgette Dlibrias, who was one of the pioneers in the radiocarbon research fields, passed away on May 2015. She graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique Fminine de Paris in 1946, and then was recruited at the Commissariat l'Energie Atomique (CEA) into the Service des Constructions Electriques. She participated in the first test of divergence of the French nuclear reactor ZOE in 1948 by constructing boron trifluoride neutron detectors (in Jacquemon…

  • Tephrostratigraphy, chronology and climatic events of the Mediterranean basin during the Holocene

    Open Access•Giovanni Zanchetta, Roberto Sulpizio et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2011•Cited by: 14•References: 20

The identification and characterisation of high-frequency climatic changes during the Holocene requires natural archives with precise and accurate chronological control, which is usually difficult to achieve using only 14 C chronologies. The presence of time-spaced tephra beds in Quaternary Mediterranean successions represents an additional, independent tool for dating and correlating different sedimentary archives. These tephra layers are potent…

  • Obituary

    Open Access•Martine Paterne•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2011•References: 2

After more than 50 years dedicated to scientific research and to the dissemination of knowledge, Dr Jacques Labeyrie recently passed away at the age of 91. Upon graduating from the Ecole Supérieure de Physique et Chimie Industrielle de la Ville de Paris (1940–43), he became the assistant to Frédéric Joliot-Curie at the Collège de France. With Joliot's recommendation, he was recruited in 1946 to the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique (CEA), where h…

  • Radiocarbon Intercomparison Program for Chauvet Cave

    Open Access•Marie-Thérèse Cuzange, Emmanuelle Delqué-Količ et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 14•References: 7

We present the first results of an accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) radiocarbon intercomparison program on 3 different charcoal samples collected in one of the hearths of the Megaceros gallery of Chauvet Cave (Ardèche, France). This cave, rich in parietal decoration, is important for the study of the appearance and evolution of prehistoric art because certain drawings have been 14 C dated to the Aurignacian period at the beginning of the Upper…

  • Paired 14 C and 230 Th/U Dating of Surface Corals from the Marquesas and Vanuatu (Sub-Equatorial Pacific) in the 3000 to 15,000 Cal Yr Interval

    Open Access•Martine Paterne, Linda K Ayliffe et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2004•Cited by: 8•References: 30

Paired radiocarbon and 230 Th/U dating was performed on 13 surface corals from submerged reefs in the Marquesas and from raised terraces in Vanuatu. The absolute ages of the corals analyzed ranged from 3000 to 15,000 cal yr. Estimates of the difference between the absolute and 14 C ages of these corals are in agreement with previous determinations up until 11,500 cal yr. The resulting mean sea surface reservoir age R is determined at 390 ± 60 yr …

  • Development of an Automated System for Preparation of organic samples

    Open Access•Christine Hatté, Jean-Jacques Poupeau et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2003•Cited by: 9•References: 6

We constructed an automated system to transform organic samples to CO 2 , which included several options such as: combustion in 2 steps with collection of the 2 fractions, volatile fraction combustion, and 13 C sampling. The process includes organic matter combustion, CO 2 drying, quantification of the mass of carbon, CO 2 collection in a glass vial, and eventually 13 C sampling. The system is computer-controlled and -monitored. The apparent back…

  • Is Classical Acid-Alkali-Acid Treatment Responsible for Contamination? An Alternative Proposition

Open Access•Christine Hatté, Jean Morvan et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 28•References: 9

It is well known that, during the widely used AAA pretreatment (de Vries and Barendsen 1954), alkali treatment is responsible for the incorporation of modern carbon due to the precipitation of atmospheric CO 2 as carbonate. Until now, the last step of the experiment, consisting in acid treatment (most of the time with hydrochloric acid) was considered to be sufficient to eliminate all of lab contamination. But wood, peat and sediment present a co…

  • Searching Solar Periodicities in the Late Glacial Record of Atmospheric Radiocarbon

    Open Access•Tomasz Goslar, Nadine Tisnerat-Laborde et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•References: 19

Accelerator mass spectrometry radiocarbon (AMS 14 C) dating of the late glacial section of laminated sediments from Lake Gościąż and Lake Perespilno, Poland, performed with time resolution of 20–30 years suggests quasi-periodic oscillations of δ 14 C. The regularity of oscillations has been checked by the Maximum Entropy and Fast Fourier Transform methods (MEM and FFT), which revealed peaks at 200 and 230 yr. These periods are similar to those fo…

  • Development of Accurate and Reliable 14 C Chronologies for Loess Deposits

Open Access•Christine Hatté, Luiz Carlos Pessenda et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 9•References: 12

Due to very high accumulation rates, loess sequences are best suited archives for the continental paleoclimate of glacial periods. Accurate chronologies cannot be easily established by radiocarbon-dating, because of the lack of organic macrorests, the only material for reliable 14 C dating so far. A chemical protocol is reported to extract the organic matter of loess (organic carbon content lower than 0.1% by weight) for accelerator mass spectrom…

  • Radiocarbon Calibration by Means of Varves Versus 14 C Ages of Terrestrial Macrofossils from Lake Gościąż and Lake Perespilno, Poland
