  • Conversations on Climate

    Open Access•Gerrit Lohmann•BOOK•Conversations on Climate•2025

This open access book presents interviews with high-profile climate scientists about state-of-the-art research questions. Consequences of climate change have become more and more visible and are now regularly discussed in political and societal debates. While climate scientists have been warning about potential consequences of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions for decades, their call for action has not sufficiently been heard for long. Meanw…

  • The impact of non-breaking surface waves in upper-ocean temperature simulations of the Last Glacial Maximum

Open Access•Shizhu Wang, Xun Gong et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2021

Widespread mismatches between proxy-based and modelling studies of the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) has limited better understanding about interglacial-glacial climate change. In this study, we incorporate non-breaking surface waves (NBW) induced mixing into an ocean model to assess the potential role of waves in changing a simulation of LGM upper oceans. Our results show a substantial 40 m subsurface warming introduced by surface waves in LGM summ…

  • Early-Holocene simulations using different forcings and resolutions in AWI-ESM

    Open Access•Xiaoxu Shi, Gerrit Lohmann et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Cited by: 1•References: 13

The earliest part of the Holocene, from 11.5k to 7k (k = 1000 years before present), is a critical transition period between the relatively cold last deglaciation and the warm middle Holocene. It is marked by more pronounced seasonality and reduced greenhouse gases (GHGs) than the present state, as well as by the presence of the Laurentide Ice Sheet (LIS) and glacial meltwater perturbation. This paper performs experiments under pre-industrial and…

  • A Short Note on Marine Reservoir Age Simulations Used in IntCal20

    Open Access•Martin Butzin, Timothy J Heaton et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2020•Cited by: 12•References: 39

Beyond ~13.9 cal kBP, the IntCal20 radiocarbon ( 14 C) calibration curve is based upon combining data across a range of different archives including corals and planktic foraminifera. In order to reliably incorporate such marine data into an atmospheric curve, we need to resolve these records into their constituent atmospheric signal and marine reservoir age. We present results of marine reservoir age simulations enabling this resolution, applying…

  • Winter and summer climate patterns in the European-Middle East during recent centuries as documented in a northern Red Sea coral record

Open Access•Norel Rîmbu, Thomas Felis et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 1

The Ras Umm Sidd coral 6180 record from the northern Red Sea is the northernmost centuries long coral time series that is currently available in seasonal resolution (AD 1750-1995). Here we investigate climate patterns associated with the coral 6180 time series separately for boreal winter and summer, using instrumental and reconstructed climate fields for the European-Middle East region. The winter coral 6180 record is associated with dominant mo…

  • Effects of mid-Holocene river runoff on the Arctic ocean/sea-ice system

    Open Access•Matthias Prange, Gerrit Lohmann•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Cited by: 2•References: 2

Recent geological studies have revealed that the freshwater input to the Arctic Ocean was highly variable during the Holocene. In the present study, the influence of mid-Holocene river runoff on large-scale Arctic ocean/sea-ice dynamics is examined using a general circulation model. A palaeohydrological forcing for the time interval around 6 ka BP ( 14 C timescale) is constructed by compiling data from the available literature. Keeping all other …

  • Major Change in Atlantic Deep and Bottom Waters 700,000 yr Ago

    Open Access•L C Peterson, Gerrit Lohmann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1982

In the modern South Atlantic the transition between deep water and bottom water is marked by a clear change in the associated benthonic foraminiferal fauna. Uvigerina and Globocassidulina characterize oxygen-poor Circumpolar Deep Water which has long been isolated from the surface. Planulina and miliolids are found associated with the more newly formed, oxygen-rich North Atlantic Deep Water. Antarctic Bottom Water is characterized by “Epistominel…

  • Carbon Isotopic Changes in Benthic Foraminifera from the Western South Atlantic

    Open Access•William B Curry, Gerrit Lohmann et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•1982

Oxygen- and carbon-isotopic analyses have been performed on the benthic foraminifer Planulina wuellerstorfi in seven Late Quaternary cores from the Vema Channel-Rio Grande Rise region. The cores are distributed over the water-depth interval of 2340 to 3939 m, which includes the present transition from North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) to Antarctic Bottom Water (AABW). The carbon-isotopic records in the cores vary as a function of water depth. The …
