Unravelling Quasi-Continuous 14 C Profiles by Laser Ablation AMS
Laser ablation (LA) accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is a novel method for rapid online radiocarbon ( 14 C) analysis of carbonates. The quasi-continuous 14 C profiles obtained with this technique demand a customized data evaluation protocol to relate the acquired 14 C data to the analyzed sample. We take into account the mixing effects due to the minimal counting (integration) time of the AMS, the finite width of the laser beam and the gas was…
Novel Laser Ablation Sampling Device for the Rapid Radiocarbon Analysis of Carbonate Samples by Accelerator Mass Spectrometry
Conventional radiocarbon analysis of carbonate records with accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) is time consuming and the achievable spatial resolution is limited, because individual samples have to be taken and need to be converted to graphite for the measurement. A new laser ablation (LA) in situ sampling technique for rapid online 14 C analyses of carbonate records by AMS is presented. By focusing a 193-nm ArF excimer laser on carbonate sample…
Radiocarbon Dating to a Single Year by Means of Rapid Atmospheric 14C Changes
In the best case, radiocarbon measurements allow artificial objects to be dated with a precision of 10 calendar years when conventional wiggle-matching onto the IntCal09 calibration curve is applied. More precise dating can only be achieved by using annually resolved 14 C calibration data, particularly in timespans when there are rapid changes in atmospheric 14 C concentration. The recently observed jump in atmospheric 14 C concentration of 1.5% …

Second Radiocarbon Intercomparison Program for the Chauvetpont d'Arc Cave, Ardèche, France
The Chauvet-Pont d'Arc Cave is one of the most important sites for the study of the earliest manifestations and development of prehistoric art at the beginning of the Upper Paleolithic. Different dating techniques have been performed thus far (AMS 14 C, U/Th TIMS, 36 Cl dating) to model the chronological framework of this decorated cave. The cave yielded several large charcoal fragments, which enabled the opportunity for obtaining multiple dates;…
EnvironMicadas
A more developed and modern technology replaced the old radiocarbon measuring methods in Hungary, based on isotope separation by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) and not on activity measurements. In summer 2011, the EnvironMICADAS was successfully installed in the Laboratory of HEKAL, Debrecen, Hungary. In this project, a multipurpose gas-handling system was developed for the gas ion source of EnvironMICADAS at ETH Zürich, designed for the mea…

On-line Radiocarbon Measurements of Small Samples Using Elemental Analyzer and Micadas Gas Ion Source
An on-line measurement system was installed at the MICADAS in Zurich, using an elemental analyzer (EA) as a combustion unit to enable direct radiocarbon measurement of samples containing carbon in the range of 5–100 μg possible with minimum effort. The samples are combusted in small capsules and the gaseous combustion products are separated by the EA. The carbon dioxide leaving the EA in a high helium flow is concentrated on a small external trap…
Are Compact AMS Facilities a Competitive Alternative to Larger Tandem Accelerators
In the last decade, small and compact accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) systems became available operating at terminal voltages of 1 MV and below. This new category of instruments has become competitive for radiocarbon detection to larger tandem accelerators and many of these instruments are successfully used for 14 C dating or biomedical applications. The AMS group at ETH Zurich has demonstrated that small instruments can be built, which allow…
Micadas
The prototype mini carbon dating system (MICADAS) at ETH Zurich has been in routine operation for almost 2 yr. Because of its simple and compact layout, setting up a radiocarbon measurement is fast and the system runs very reliably over days or even weeks without retuning. The stability of the instrument is responsible for the good performance in highest-precision measurements where results of single samples can be reproduced within less than 2‰.…
A Gas Ion Source for Radiocarbon Measurements at 200 kV
The novel tabletop miniaturized radiocarbon dating system (MICADAS) at ETH Zurich features a hybrid Cs sputter negative ion source for the measurement of solid graphite and gaseous CO 2 samples. The source produces stable currents of up to 6 μA C − out of gaseous samples with an efficiency of 3–6%. A gas feeding system has been set up that enables constant dosing of CO 2 into the Cs sputter ion source and ensures stable measuring conditions. The …
Source Apportionment of Aerosols by 14 C Measurements in Different Carbonaceous Particle Fractions
Radiocarbon enables a distinction between contemporary and fossil carbon, which can be used for the apportionment of biogenic and anthropogenic sources in environmental studies. In order to apply this approach to carbonaceous atmospheric aerosols, it is necessary to adapt pretreatment procedures to the requirements of 14 C measurements. In this work, we followed an approach in which total carbon (TC) is subdivided into fractions of different chem…
Tropical Climate Instability
An ice core record from the Guliya ice cap on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau provides evidence of regional climatic conditions over the last glacial cycle. 36 Cl data suggest that the deepest 20 meters of the core may be more than 500,000 years old. The δ 18 O change across Termination I is ∼5.4 per mil, similar to that in the Huascarán (Peru) and polar ice cores. Three Guliya interstadials (Stages 3, 5a, and 5c) are marked by increases in δ 18 O va…
