Tree Rings as Archives of Atmospheric Pollution by Fossil Carbon Dioxide in Bratislava
Results of radiocarbon ( 14 C) analysis of a tree-ring series from Bratislava, Slovakia, covering the period from 1970 to 2004 are presented. For a part of this time period, monthly 14 C measurements of atmospheric carbon dioxide from Bratislava sampling station are compared with the tree-ring results. The effects of fossil CO 2 emissions on 14 C levels in the environment are emphasized by comparison with atmospheric clean air reference values (S…

The Best possible Time resolution
Today, accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) technology enables us to carry out very precise measurements of radiocarbon ( 14 C). Unfortunately, due to fluctuations in the 14 C calibration curve, the resulting calibrated time intervals vary from decades up to centuries in calibrated age. Within a time scale of several decades, we can find several time intervals on the 14 C calibration curve which correspond with periods of rapid increases in atmosp…
Carbon Isotopes as Tracers of Organic and Inorganic Carbon in Baltic Sea Sediments
Distributions of Δ 14 C TOC studied in bottom sediments collected during 2011–2016 in the Curonian Lagoon and in the open Baltic Sea indicated wide variations of Δ 14 C TOC values. Laboratory experiments on differential carbon utilization by Pseudomonas putida isolated from bottom sediments were carried out for better understanding of impacts of different sources on Δ 14 C TOC variations. Preferential glucose uptake (up to 80%) as a carbon source…
Radiocarbon in the Atmosphere of the Žlkovce Monitoring Station of the Bohunice NPP
Radiocarbon variations in the atmosphere have been observed at the Žlkovce monitoring station of the Bohunice nuclear power plant (NPP), situated only 5 km ESE from the NPP. The observed 14 C levels provide unique evidence of a decreasing long-term impact of the Bohunice NPP on the region. Simultaneously, decreasing emissions of fossil fuel carbon dioxide in the atmosphere of the monitoring site have been found. The observed Δ 14 C variations wit…
Estimating the Amount of 14 CO 2 in the Atmosphere During the Holocene and Glacial Periods
Radiocarbon has been used to define parameters for modeling past, recent, and future CO 2 /carbon amounts in the atmosphere and in other environmental compartments. In the present paper, we estimate the amount of 14 C in the atmosphere by calculating the molar activity of 14 CO 2 (quantity of 14 CO 2 molecules per mol of air). Data on the reconstruction of the past concentration of atmospheric CO 2 from Antarctic ice cores and Δ 14 C activities f…
Radiocarbon and Stable Isotopes as Groundwater Tracers in the Danube River Basin of SW Slovakia
Horizontal and vertical variations in the distribution of 14 C, δ 13 C, δ 18 O, and δ 2 H in groundwater of Žitný Island (Rye Island) have been studied. Žitný Island, situated in the Danube River Basin, is the largest island in Europe that is formed by interconnected rivers. It is also the largest groundwater reservoir in central Europe (∼10 10 m 3 of drinking water). The δ 2 H vs. δ 18 O plot made from collected groundwater samples showed an agr…
Spatial Radiocarbon and Stable Carbon Isotope Variability of Mineral and Thermal Waters in Slovakia
Isotope hydrology investigations were carried out with the aim to study isotope variability in mineral and thermal waters (MTW) of Slovakia. The aquifers of MTW were formed by Triassic limestones and dolomites, which are found in the mountains as well as in the pre-Tertiary substratum of depressions and lowlands. The MTW were of artesian and/or open structures. At present, there are only boreholes available, as natural outflows have already been …
Estimation of Long-Term Trends in the Tropospheric 14 CO 2 Activity Concentration
Fossil CO 2 emissions have been diluting the global 14 C/C ratio of atmospheric CO 2 (Suess effect). We estimated the 14 CO 2 amount in the atmosphere (and its trend) utilizing the calculated 14 CO 2 activity concentration in the atmosphere ( a acn , reported in mBq m –3 ). This parameter, calculated from Δ 14 CO 2 and the CO 2 mixing ratio (reported in micromoles of CO 2 per mole of air), is connected with the 14 CO 2 quantity in the volume or m…
Radiocarbon in the Air of Central Europe
Regional levels of radiocarbon have been monitored in order to investigate the impact of fossil fuel combustion on the activity of atmospheric 14 CO 2 in central Europe. Data from atmospheric 14 CO 2 monitoring stations in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary for the period 2000–2008 are presented and discussed. The Prague and Bratislava monitoring stations showed a distinct local Suess effect when compared to the Jungfraujoch clean-air moni…
Distribution of Radiocarbon in the Southwestern North Pacific
Radiocarbon measurements in seawater samples taken at six stations in the southwestern North Pacific visited during the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 1997 Pacific Ocean Expedition were carried out at the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) facility of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). Three stations were located close to GEOSECS stations, and three were in the vicinity of Bikini and Enewetak Atolls, which may be infl…
Radiocarbon in Seawater at Radioactive Waste Dumping Sites in the Northeast Atlantic and Northwest Pacific
Radiocarbon has been an important constituent of radioactive wastes dumped in the open ocean and marginal seas as well as wastes released from nuclear reprocessing plants. Therefore, in some regions these sources could have a greater impact on 14 C concentration in seawater than global fallout. The high analytical sensitivity of 14 C measurement by accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) allows even tracer amounts of 14 C to be found in seawater at r…
