Excavations at the Peel of Lumphanan, Aberdeenshire, 1975-9
Five seasons of excavation on this earthwork castle provided fragmentary information about the initial modification and occupation of a natural drumlin, with associated wet ditch, outer bank and stone causeway. In its earliest phase the site was associated with the Durward family. Ceramic and numismatic evidence indicates an initial occupation span from the mid 13th century to the early 14th century. Subsequently the site was reoccupied in the la…
The chapel and enclosure on the Brough of Deerness, Orkney
Excavations took place at this site in 1975-6, followed by a survey in 1977, at the invitation of the Inspectorate of Ancient Monuments, as clearance of turf and rubble had previously revealed a hoard of post-medieval coins. Further coins were found, which relate to the period after usage of the chapel had ceased: the group is interpreted in votive terms and related to accounts of pilgrimage to the site. The unicameral chapel itself had both a ti…
The excavation of a hut circle at Cùl a'Bhaile, Jura
Farmstead: multiperiod hut circle in enclosure, late 2nd/early 1st millennium BC
Excavations at Pierowall Quarry, Westray, Orkney
Complex multi-period site. Spiral-decorated stones, large circular chambered tomb of mid-3rd millennium, demolished for small structure (Grooved Ware) then abandoned until large Iron Age round house built over cairn. Critical examination of many recent Orkney publications in the light of this evidence, and some new approaches suggested. 14C dates and environmental evidence
Sites of the third millennium BC to the first millennium AD at North Mains, Strathallan, Perthshire
Three sites were excavated: a class II henge, a massive round barrow and a pair of ring-ditches. Five periods of activity were noted on the henge site: I - pre henge-bank activity, including one burial; II - the class II henge, a ditch with an external bank enclosing a timber ring (late third millennium BC); III - burial and ritual/domestic activity, the former associated with food vessels, cinerary urns and a beaker, the latter with beaker mater…
The excavation of a late Neolithic henge-type enclosure at Balfarg, Markinch, Fife, Scotland, 1977-78
The Uptake of Bomb 14 C in Humans
Glasgow University Radiocarbon Measurements VIII
The analytical facilities at Glasgow have been extended to include gas proportional (CO 2 and CH 4 ) and liquid scintillation (C 6 H 6 ) counting laboratories. The results presented here were obtained during 1972-1974 using the CO 2 gas counting system only. In brief, organic samples, after pretreatment as described in the text, are burned in a tube combustion unit and the evolved CO 2 absorbed in KOH solution. BaCO 3 is precipitated and acid-hyd…
Glasgow University Radiocarbon Measurements VI
The following list presents results obtained during 1970-1971 and is a continuation of research of which data have been pub. previously (Baxter et al. , 1969; Ergin et al. , 1970; Baxter and Walton, 1970; Harkness and Walton, 1972; Ergin et al. , 1972). The major research efforts at Glasgow are aimed at evaluation of (a) natural annual C 14 levels and (b) burdens and residence times of artificial C 14 in the environment and human tissues. The res…
