Late pleistocene/early holocene environments and climates, fauna, and human occupation in the argentine altiplano
The Barro Negro site (23°S lat., 65°37′W long.) in the Altiplano (Puna) of northwestern Argentina contains a well stratified sequence of remains of Hippidion , the American extinct horse, camelids, and archaeological materials, which is the focus of this study. In addition to establishing a reliable chronology, paleoenvironmental information was obtained based on analyses of pollen and stable isotopes (oxygen and carbon) from bone and marl. The d…
Discordant Ages Related to Reservoir Effect of Associated Archaeologic Remains from the Tunel Site, Beagle Channel, Argentine Republic
Evidence of a tradition of human maritime adaptation was recovered from various sites at Beagle Channel dating back to ca 6000 yr BP. Final occupations date to European settlement in the 19th century. The Túnel site exhibits discontinuous human occupation ranging from 6000 to 500 yr BP, represented by different archaeologic remains in each layer. Associated charcoal, mollusk shells, and Lama guanicoe and Arctocephalus australis bones were dated. …
Optimization of Liquid Scintillation Counting for 14 C Dating
The effects of different measurement conditions and sample preparation in liquid scintillation counting of benzene for 14 C dating were tested. The goal of this work was to find the highest figure of merit through the variation of scintillation cocktail to benzene ratio, and measurement windows. Measurements were performed on 5ml of benzene plus increasing quantities of scintillation cocktail (7g of PPO and 0.5g of Me 2 POPOP in 1L of scintillati…
Ingeis Radiocarbon Laboratory Dates II
The following list consists of archaeologic and geologic dates from Argentina processed in the 14 C laboratory of INGEIS. The ages presented were obtained by liquid scintillation counting of benzene, using the techniques outlined in a previous paper (Albero & Angiolini, 1983). The results are expressed in 14 C years relative to 1950, using the Libby half-life of 5570 yr
A Secondary Standard for Radiocarbon Dating
The preparation and calibration of a secondary standard for the INGEIS Radiocarbon Dating Laboratory are presented. This standard is barium carbonate with a specific activity almost twice that of NBS oxalic acid. It was prepared from BaCO 3 with high specific activity and commercial potassium carbonate by an isotopic dilution technique. The advantages of this standard are: 1) the preparation is simple and can be achieved with ordinary labware; 2)…
Stable Isotope Fractionation During Benzene Synthesis for Radiocarbon Dating
13 C isotope analyses of different stages of benzene synthesis have been made to study partial isotope fractionation. More than 60 analyses of carbonates, charcoal, carbon dioxide, and benzene were made in a double collector mass spectrometer. In the first stage of the synthesis (conversion to carbon dioxide) little or no fractionation was observed, beyond the analytical error of the method. Later stages of the process, show a greater and systema…
