Reservoir Ages in the Western Tropical North Atlantic from One Coral off Martinique Island (Lesser Antilles)
Sea surface reservoir ages (R) are reported from radiocarbon ( 14 C) measurements of the annual growth bands of coral Siderastrea siderea collected on the Atlantic coast off Martinique Island, in the Lesser Antilles volcanic arc. Mean values of R are similar between 1835 and 1845 during pre-anthropogenic times at 385±30 yr and between 1895 and 1905 at 382±20 yr when there was a huge eruption from the Montagne Pelée volcano in 1902–1903. Limited 1…

Paired 14 C and 230 Th/U Dating of Surface Corals from the Marquesas and Vanuatu (Sub-Equatorial Pacific) in the 3000 to 15,000 Cal Yr Interval
Paired radiocarbon and 230 Th/U dating was performed on 13 surface corals from submerged reefs in the Marquesas and from raised terraces in Vanuatu. The absolute ages of the corals analyzed ranged from 3000 to 15,000 cal yr. Estimates of the difference between the absolute and 14 C ages of these corals are in agreement with previous determinations up until 11,500 cal yr. The resulting mean sea surface reservoir age R is determined at 390 ± 60 yr …
Raised Coral Terraces at Malakula, Vanuatu, Southwest Pacific, Indicate High Sea Level During Marine Isotope Stage 3
The occurrence of a series of raised coral reefs from the uplifted island of Malakula (Vanuatu, SW Pacific) provide an opportunity to examine sea-level fluctuations over at least the past 120,000 years. Thirteen fossil coral samples from Malakula were analyzed by the thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS) U/Th dating technique, yielding information on sea levels during late marine isotope stage 3 and early stage 4. Our findings are in good a…
A High-Resolution Radiocarbon Calibration Between 11,700 and 12,400 Calendar Years Bp Derived from 230 Th Ages of Corals from Espiritu Santo Island, Vanuatu
This paper presents radiocarbon results from a single Diploastrea heliopora coral from Vanuatu that lived during the Younger Dryas climatic episode, between ca. 11,700 and 12,400 calendar yr bp. The specimen has been independently dated with multiple 230 Th measurements to permit calibration of the 14 C time scale. Growth bands in the coral were used to identify individual years of growth. 14 C measurements were made on each year. These values we…
Radiocarbon Calibration by Means of Mass Spectrometric 230 Th/ 234 U and 14 C Ages of Corals
As first shown by Bard et al. (1990a), high-precision 230 Th- 234 U ages can be used successfully to calibrate the radiocarbon time scale beyond the high-precision tree-ring calibration that now reaches 11,900 cal bp (Kromer and Spurk 1998). Using mass spectrometric techniques, we measured 14 C and 230 Th ages on new samples collected from boreholes drilled off the islands of Tahiti and Mururoa (French Polynesia) in order to complement the databa…
