  • The Holocene formation of inland sand dunes in the North of Schleswig-Holstein (Northern Germany) and its palaeoenvironmental significance

Open Access•Christian Stolz, Rainer Lehmann et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2026

Geomorphological investigations were carried out in the Süderlügum inland dune field and at two existing dune outcrops near Enge-Sande (North Frisia). The focus was on the age of the dunes, possible anthropogenic or climatically induced reactivation phases and their triggers against the backdrop of a palaeoenvironmental reconstruction. To this end, corings and outcrops were created, which were described and classified in terms of soil geography. …

  • Assessing Lock-in Depth and Establishing a Late Holocene Paleomagnetic Secular Variation Record From the Mongolian Altai

Open Access•Marcel Bliedtner, Torsten Haberzettl et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2024•References: 49

Although paleomagnetic secular variations (PSV) often corroborate radiocarbon ( 14 C)-based lacustrine sediment chronologies, this is not the case at the high-altitude site Khar Nuur in the Mongolian Altai Mountains. Our results show that the inclination pattern resembles those from a regional reference record from Shireet Naiman Nuur and global geomagnetic field models very well, but with a constant offset of 730 ± 90 yr. Possible reservoir effe…

  • Evidence for strong relations between the upper Tagus loess formation (central Iberia) and the marine atmosphere off the Iberian margin during the last glacial period

Open Access•Daniel Wolf, Thomas Kolb et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

During glacial times, the North Atlantic region was affected by serious climate changes corresponding to Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles that were linked to dramatic shifts in sea temperature and moisture transfer to the continents. However, considerable efforts are still needed to understand the effects of these shifts on terrestrial environments. In this context, the Iberian Peninsula is particularly interesting because of its close proximity to the …

  • Approaches and challenges to the study of loess—Introduction to the LoessFest Special Issue

    Open Access•Randall J Schaetzl, E Arthur Bettis et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2018

In September 2016, the annual meeting of the International Union for Quaternary Research’s Loess and Pedostratigraphy Focus Group, traditionally referred to as a LoessFest, met in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, USA. The 2016 LoessFest focused on “thin” loess deposits and loess transportation surfaces. This LoessFest included 75 registered participants from 10 countries. Almost half of the participants were from outside the United States, and 18 of the pa…

  • Comparative 14 C and OSL dating of loess-paleosol sequences to evaluate post-depositional contamination of n -alkane biomarkers

Open Access•Michael Zech, Sebastian Kreutzer et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2017

There is an ongoing controversial discussion as to whether n- alkane lipid biomarkers—and organic matter of loess in general—reflect a synsedimentary paleoenvironmental/climate signal or whether they are significantly affected by postdepositional “contamination,” for example related to root and rhizomicrobial activity. In order to address this issue at our study site (the Middle to Late Weichselian loess-paleosol sequence Gleina in Saxony, German…

  • Late Quaternary relative humidity changes from Mt. Kilimanjaro, based on a coupled 2H-18O biomarker paleohygrometer approach

Open Access•Johannes Hepp, Roland Zech et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2017

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Leaf Waxes in the Loess-Paleosol Sequence Kurtak, Central Siberia

Open Access•Mischa Haas, Marcel Bliedtner et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2017•Cited by: 1•References: 48

Loess-paleosol sequences (LPS) are valuable archives for Quaternary climate and environmental changes. So far, LPS are generally dated using luminescence, with ~10% uncertainties, or radiocarbon ( 14 C) analyses in the rare cases that charcoal or macrofossils are available. For this study, we determined 14 C ages of leaf waxes (long-chain n -alkanes) extracted from the LPS Kurtak in central Siberia. 14 C ages range from 16.7 to 22.9 ka cal BP for…

  • Evidence for humid conditions during the last glacial from leaf wax patterns in the loess–paleosol sequence El Paraíso, Central Spain

    Open Access•Imke K Schäfer, Marcel Bliedtner et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2016

  • A late pleistocene glacial chronology from the Kitschi-Kurumdu Valley, Tien Shan (Kyrgyzstan), based on 10 Be surface exposure dating

    Open Access•Roland Zech•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Surface exposure dating has become a helpful tool for establishing numeric glacial chronologies, particularly in arid high-mountain regions where radiocarbon dating is challenging due to limited availability of organic material. This study presents 13 new 10 Be surface exposure ages from the Kitschi-Kurumdu Valley in the At Bashi Range, Tien Shan. Three moraines were dated to ~ 15, 21 and > 56 ka, respectively, and corroborate previous findings t…

  • The late Pleistocene glaciation in the Bogchigir Valleys (Pamir, Tajikistan) based on 10 Be surface exposure dating

Open Access•Ines Röhringer, Roland Zech et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2012

Glacial chronologies from the Pamir may not only provide insights into past changes in temperature, but also into past changes in precipitation related to the northern-hemispheric westerlies and the monsoonal circulation. We present 18 new exposure ages from the Bogchigir Valleys that complement and refine our previous studies in these valleys. The most extensive dated glaciation in the area occurred ~ 100 ka, during Marine Oxygen Isotope Stage (…

  • Reconstruction of a complex late Quaternary glacial landscape in the Cordillera de Cochabamba (Bolivia) based on a morphostratigraphic and multiple dating approach

    Open Access•J H May, Jan-Hendrik May et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2011

Although glacial landscapes have previously been used for the reconstruction of late Quaternary glaciations in the Central Andes, only few data exist for the Eastern Cordillera in Bolivia. Here, we present results from detailed morphostratigraphic mapping and new data of surface exposure dating (SED), optically stimulated luminescence (OSL), and radiocarbon dating ( 14 C) from the Huara Loma Valley, Cordillera de Cochabamba (Bolivia). Discrepanci…

  • Late Quaternary glacial and climate history of the Pamir Mountains derived from cosmogenic 10 Be exposure ages

Open Access•Roland Zech, Uwe Abramowski et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

Moraines southwest of Lake Yashilkul, Pamir, Tajikistan, were dated using 10 Be exposure ages of boulder surfaces. We found evidence for (1) an extensive glaciation ∼60,000 yr ago; (2) a less extensive glacial advance, which deposited a characteristic hummocky moraine lobe with exposure ages ranging from ∼11,000 to 47,000 yr, probably deposited at or before 47,000 yr ago; and (3) lateral moraines with exposure ages of ∼40,000 yr, 27,000 yr and 19…
