  • Hamburg University Radiocarbon Dates I

    Open Access•H W Scharpenseel, F Pietig et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1976•Cited by: 7•References: 10

Radiocarbon measurements are carried out mainly on soil samples and soil organic matter fractions. Benzene samples are prepared as described earlier (Scharpenseel and Pietig, 1969; 1970). Radioactivity is measured in a single quartz vial, using a Packard Tri Carb Model 3075 as well as a Berthold Betascint BF 5000. Most equipment has been transferred from Bonn University Radiocarbon Dating Lab to Hamburg, where operation of former Bonn Radiocarbon…

  • University of Bonn Natural Radiocarbon Measurements VII

    Open Access•H W Scharpenseel, F Pietig•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1974•Cited by: 3•References: 1

Radiocarbon measurements, mainly on soil and water samples are being continued. Benzene samples are prepared as described earlier (Scharpenseel and Pietig, 1969; 1970). Radioactivity is measured in a single quartz vial, and also with 13 specially manufactured, low background Teflon/Duraluminium vials, similar to the system described by Polach (1971, pers commun)

  • University of Bonn Natural Radiocarbon Measurements VI

    Open Access•H W Scharpenseel, F Pietig•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1973•Cited by: 4•References: 5

Continuation of radiocarbon measurements, mainly on ground water, soil, and subhydric sediment samples. Sample preparation was described earlier (Scharpenseel and Pietig, 1969)

  • University of Bonn Natural Radiocarbon Measurements V

    Open Access•H W Scharpenseel, F Pietig•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1973•Cited by: 4•References: 2

Radiocarbon measurements, mainly on soil and water samples are being continued. Benzene samples are prepared as described earlier (Scharpenseel and Pietig, 1969). By adding another counting unit, the lab. now uses 3 liquid scintillation spectrometers and 4 benzene synthesis lines

  • University of Bonn Natural Radiocarbon Measurements IV

    Open Access•H W Scharpenseel, F Pietig•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1971•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Radiocarbon measurements, mainly on soil and water samples have been continued. Sample preparation is carried out following methods described by the authors elsewhere (Scharpenseel and Pietig, 1968/69; 1970a, b)

  • University of Bonn Natural Radiocarbon Measurements III

    Open Access•H W Scharpenseel, F Pietig•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1970•Cited by: 6•References: 6

The laboratory has continued to concentrate on soil and water dating, using the benzene method as outlined in Scharpenseel and Pietig (1969a)

  • University of Bonn Natural Radiocarbon Measurements II

    H W Scharpenseel, F Pietig et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1969•Cited by: 3•References: 2

This list includes most of the dates produced from September 1967 to April 1968. The laboratory continues to use the benzene method of the previous date list (Radiocarbon, 1968, v. 10, p. 8–28); however, the counter and chemical treatment equipment were transferred to a field laboratory in order to avoid any possibility of contamination. Two new benzene synthesis lines of our own construction were added to the commercial unit. Their operation is …

  • Bonn Radiocarbon Measurements I

    Open Access•H W Scharpenseel, F Pietig et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1968•Cited by: 9•References: 7

The laboratory started dating in 1966 using liquid scintillation techniques. Considerable effort has been expended on improvements in both sample preparation and detection (Pietig and Scharpenseel, 1964 and 1966). Yields now approach 100% and 4 to 6 samples are completed each week. A solution of 3 cc synthesized benzene and 1 cc “dead” commercial toluene is employed for ordinary measurements. Toluene contains PPO and POPOP scintillators that give…
