  • Radiocarbon Updates

    Open Access•Robert F Maslowski, Charles M Niquette et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1996

This publication contains 1919 radiocarbon dates for archeological sites and objects in Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. These data represent most radiocarbon dates available for the re- gion up to August 1996. The database is presented in a tabular format in ascending order of radiocarbon age. The database includes site numbers, site names, components, time periods, lab numbers, 14C age, sigma, calibrated age and references

  • Dating the Turin Shroud—An Assessment

    Open Access•H E Gove•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1990•Citada por: 3•Referencias: 8

An assessment is made of the credibility of the radiocarbon dating of the shroud of Turin. The quoted final results produced a calibrated calendar age range of AD 1260–1390 for the linen of the Turin shroud at a 95% confidence level. The measurements were carried out independently in three accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) laboratories located at the University of Arizona, Tucson, Arizona, USA, Oxford University, Oxford, England, and ETH-Höngge…

  • A 36Cl Profile in Greenland Ice from AD 1265 to 1865

    N J Conard, P W Kubik et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989

We have measured the concentration of 36 Cl in 67 samples from the upper portion of the Camp Century ice core. The profile extends from AD 1265 to 1865 and covers the times of the Wolf (AD 1282–1342), Spoerer (AD 1416–1534) and Maunder (AD 1645–1715) minima in sunspot number. Although the profile exhibits much short-term variation, a smoothed plot of the data shows a strong peak in 36 Cl concentration over the time of the Maunder Minimum. The dee…

  • Depth Profiles of Nitrogen and Chlorine in Pure Materials Through AMS of the Neutron Activation Products 14C and 36Cl

    David Elmore, T Z Hossain et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989

Determination of the more common light elements such as nitrogen and chlorine at trace levels is difficult because of their high abundance on sample surfaces, in materials used to build analysis instruments, and in the residual gas of the instrument vacuum. We present here a new approach to analysis of these elements: accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) combined with neutron activation. The problem of contamination is overcome by using neutron ac…

  • Progress in Radiocarbon Dating the Shroud of Turin

    H E Gove•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989

An account is presented of the current status of the project to radiocarbon date the cloth of the shroud of Turin. The procedures dictated by the Turin ecclesiastical authorities to accomplish this are discussed. It will be concluded that the original protocol, as agreed to by all parties at the Turin Workshop in 1986, suggested a preferable procedure. However, if the three laboratories, who accepted the task of dating the shroud, obtain the same…

  • The Chemical Preparation of AgCl for Measuring 36 Cl in Polar Ice with Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

    Open Access•N J Conard, David Elmore et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1986•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 5

A method of chemical separation and purification of chloride from relatively small samples (500 to 2100g) of glacial ice is presented. With this procedure the first successful measurements of pre-bomb levels of 36 Cl in Greenland ice have been made. Emphasis is placed on methods of reducing sulfur, which causes interference in the accelerator mass spectrometry, and in maximizing the yield. Data regarding the selection of materials for sample hold…

  • Radiocarbon Dating with Tandem Electrostatic Accelerators

    Open Access•H E Gove, David Elmore et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1980•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 12

An MP tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at the University of Rochester has been employed since May 1977 to detect 14 C in various terrestrial samples. The carbon sample sizes required are 1mg or less. Dating accuracies based on reproducibility now approach (± 80 years). Measurements have been made on 1850 wood, Australian sucrose, a carbon sample from Mt Shasta, a baby woolly mammoth, and an Egyptian bull mummy wrapping
