Radioactive Graphite Dispersion in the Environment in the Vicinity of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
This paper estimates the radioactive graphite dispersion on the land surface (forest litter and soil) as a result of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) release. Graphite mass was calculated using an estimated average concentration of 2.5 × 10 7 Bq/kgC (carbon). The sample collection method, sample origin and its mass, and sample preparation procedure used for preparation of benzene were taken into account to obtain the optimum sensitivity of…

C Analysis of Annual Tree Rings from the Vicinity of the Chernobyl NPP
Samples of >40 pine trees were collected from around the Chernobyl NPP for radiocarbon measurement, to determine the spatial distribution of excessive 14 C in tree rings from 1986 consequent upon accidental radiocarbon release. Tree samples were collected during 1995–1996 from sites situated at distances >2.5 km from the NPP and covering a variety of directions in relation to the NPP. To evaluate δ 14 C for 1986 annual rings, we compared 14 C lev…
Radiocarbon Updates
This publication contains 1919 radiocarbon dates for archeological sites and objects in Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia. These data represent most radiocarbon dates available for the re- gion up to August 1996. The database is presented in a tabular format in ascending order of radiocarbon age. The database includes site numbers, site names, components, time periods, lab numbers, 14C age, sigma, calibrated age and references
Newly Designed 0.8-ML Teflon® Vial for Microvolume Radiocarbon Dating
We have tested two versions of an 0.8-ml volume Teflon ® vial, designed specifically for radiocarbon dating in the microvolume range, using a modern Quantulus 1220 TM liquid scintillation (LS) spectrometer. We determined the counting performance of each vial type in conjunction with different designs of copper holder, viz. , with and without the incorporation of a “Teflon ® light coupler”. We also compared the losses of sample benzene during a ty…
Ecological Chronology of Nuclear Fuel Cycle Sites
We compared 14 C levels in annual growth rings of pine trees around the Tomsk nuclear fuel reprocessing plant (NFRP) and the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP). At the Chernobyl site, samples were taken from the control area (within a 30-km radius zone around the site) to a distance of 80 km. In Tomsk, we collected samples between 8–10 km and 10–15 km from the site, taking into account prevailing wind directions. Background samples were collecte…
