Developing Essential Biodiversity Variables for the Southern Ocean
The Southern Ocean is central to global heat and carbon cycling, connecting all the major ocean basins and regulating Earth’s climate system, and hence providing ecosystem services of global significance. However, its ecosystems are increasingly vulnerable to climate change and localized human-induced pressures, such as (biological) resource extraction, pollution, ship traffic, and tourism. Effective conservation and management require systematic…
Soosmap
The Southern Ocean is central to global ocean mixing and climate regulation via its disproportionate uptake of human-induced heat and carbon dioxide, yet the underlying processes are still poorly understood. Coordinated and sustained effort in observation and modelling of Southern Ocean processes in the past, present and future is therefore critical for understanding and mitigating the changes underway. Free and equitable access to Southern Ocean…
Exploring the potential for commercial vessels to support science and observations in the Southern Ocean
The Southern Ocean is a vast, unique and remote region that plays a fundamental role in global ocean circulation, climate and biodiversity. Understanding the ecosystems, processes and changes occurring in this region therefore has global implications. Despite this importance, the Southern Ocean remains severely under-observed and under-sampled due to its relative inaccessibility, which impacts the accuracy of global climate model projections and …
Predicting Transmission Suitability of Mosquito-Borne Diseases under Climate Change to Underpin Decision Making
The risk of the mosquito-borne diseases malaria, dengue fever and Zika virus is expected to shift both temporally and spatially under climate change. As climate change projections continue to improve, our ability to predict these shifts is also enhanced. This paper predicts transmission suitability for these mosquito-borne diseases, which are three of the most significant, using the most up-to-date climate change projections. Using a mechanistic …
Nutrient pathways and their susceptibility to past and future change in the Eurasian Arctic Ocean
Climate change is altering nutrient cycling within the Arctic Ocean, having knock-on effects to Arctic ecosystems. Primary production in the Arctic is principally nitrogen-limited, particularly in the western Pacific-dominated regions where denitrification exacerbates nitrogen loss. The nutrient status of the eastern Eurasian Arctic remains under debate. In the Barents Sea, primary production has increased by 88% since 1998. To support this rapid…
Biogeochemical consequences of a changing Arctic shelf seafloor ecosystem
Unprecedented and dramatic transformations are occurring in the Arctic in response to climate change, but academic, public, and political discourse has disproportionately focussed on the most visible and direct aspects of change, including sea ice melt, permafrost thaw, the fate of charismatic megafauna, and the expansion of fisheries. Such narratives disregard the importance of less visible and indirect processes and, in particular, miss the sub…
Storage and Hydrolysis of Seawater Samples for Inorganic Carbon Isotope Analysis
Preservation of seawater samples was tested for total inorganic carbon (∑CO 2 ), stable carbon isotope (δ 13 C), and radiocarbon ( 14 C) applications using foil bags and storage by refrigeration and freezing. The aim was to preserve representative samples with minimal storage effects but without using toxic methods such as mercuric chloride poisoning. Hydrolysis of samples to CO 2 was based on existing methods. Results of IAEA-C2 standard used wi…
