A high-quality annually laminated sequence from Lake Belau, Northern Germany
The annually laminated record of Lake Belau offers an exceptional opportunity to investigate with high temporal resolution Holocene environmental change, aspects of climate history and human impact on the landscape. A new chronology based on varve counts, 14 C-datings and heavy metal history has been established, covering the last 9400 years. Based on multiple varve counting on two core sequences, the easily countable laminated section spans abou…
Holocene hydrographical changes of the eastern Laptev Sea (Siberian Arctic) recorded in δ 18 O profiles of bivalve shells
Oxygen isotope profiles along the growth axis of fossil bivalve shells of Macoma calcarea were established to reconstruct hydrographical changes in the eastern Laptev Sea since 8400 cal yr B.P. The variability of the oxygen isotopes (δ 18 O) in the individual records is mainly attributed to variations in the salinity of bottom waters in the Laptev Sea with a modern ratio of 0.50‰/salinity. The high-resolution δ 18 O profiles exhibit distinct and …
The Toba Volcanic Event and Interstadial/Stadial Climates at the Marine Isotopic Stage 5 to 4 Transition in the Northern Indian Ocean
The Toba volcanic event, one of the largest eruptions during the Quaternary, is documented in marine sediment cores from the northeastern Arabian Sea. On the crest of the Murray Ridge and along the western Indian continental margin, we detected distinct concentration spikes and ash layers of rhyolithic volcanic shards near the marine isotope stage 5–4 boundary with the chemical composition of the “Youngest Toba Tuff.” Time series of the U k′ 37 -…
Two Tephra Layers Bracketing Late Holocene Paleoecological Changes in Northern Germany
Paleoecological records from two Holocene peat bogs in northern Germany are linked by two microscopic volcanic ash layers, correlated by petrology and geochemistry to explosive volcanism on Iceland. The younger “Microlite tephra” cannot be correlated to any known eruption, while the older tephra layer is identified as a deposit of the Hekla 3 eruption. The tephra layers are dated by an age–depth regression of accelerator mass spectrometry 14 C ag…
North Atlantic Ice Sheet Fluctuations 10,000–70,000 Yr Ago as Inferred from Deposits on the Reykjanes Ridge, Southeast of Greenland
Marine records from the Reykjanes Ridge indicate ice sheet variations and abrupt climate changes. One of these records, ice-rafted detritus (IRD), serves as a proxy for iceberg discharges that probably indicates ice sheet fluctuations. The IRD records suggest that iceberg discharge 68,000–10,000 yr B.P. happened more frequently than the 7000- to 10,000-yr spacing of the Heinrich events. An IRD peak 67,000 to 63,000 yr B.P. further suggests that t…

Correlation of Marine 14 C Ages from the Nordic Seas with the Gisp2 Isotope Record
We present two new high-resolution sediment records from the southwestern Iceland and Norwegian Seas that were dated by numerous 14 C ages up to 54 14 C ka bp. Based on various lines of evidence, the local 14 C reservoir effect was restricted to 400–1600 yr. The planktic stable isotope records reveal several meltwater spikes that were sampled with an average time resolution of 50 yr in PS2644 and 130 yr in core 23071 during isotope stage 3. Most …
Implications of Stratigraphic and Paleoclimatic Records of the Last Interglaciation from the Nordic Seas
Climatic reconstruction of glacial to interglacial episodes from oxygen isotopes in sediment cores from the Nordic seas is complicated by strong local meltwater contributions to the oxygen isotope changes. Combination of benthic and planktic foraminiferal isotope data with foraminiferal abundances and ice-rafted debris (IRD) allows separation of local and global effects and subdivision of the marine oxygen isotope events 6.2–5.4, which include th…
Late Quaternary (Stage 2 and 3) Meltwater and Heinrich Events, Northwest Labrador Sea
Two major meltwater events are documented in cores from the NW Labrador Sea. One occurred ca. 20,000 14 C yr B.P. in association with deposition of a major detrital carbonate unit. Both prior to and after this event, δ 18 O values of near-surface planktonic foraminifera were 4.5%, indicating fully enriched glacial values. A younger event (ca. 14,000 14 C yr B.P.) is characterized by a dramatic change in δ 18 O from 4.5 to 2.0% and coincided with …
Atmospheric summer circulation and coastal upwelling in the Arabian Sea during the Holocene and the last glaciation
Accumulation rates of biogenic and lithogenic components were studied in 39 turbidite-free, well-dated sediment cores from the northern Indian Ocean to define the proportions of fluvial and eolian input and to reconstruct Quaternary patterns of coastal upwelling. The majority of dust deposited in the western Arabian Sea during the Holocene (about 100 × 10 6 t yr −1 ) is advected from Arabia by northwesterly winds, which overlie the low-level sout…
New Faunal and Isotopic Evidence on the Late Weichselian—Holocene Oceanographic Changes in the Norwegian Sea
Downcore studies of planktonic and benthonic foraminifera and δ 18 O and δ 13 C in the planktonic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sin.) in two piston cores from the southern part of the Norwegian Sea suggest large changes in the oceanic circulation pattern at the end of oxygenisotope stage 2 and in the early part of stage 1. Prior to oxygen-isotope Termination IA (16,000–13,000 yr B.P.), an isolated watermass with lower oxygen content an…
Optimum Operating Conditions of 14 C-Methane Isotope Enrichment By Concentric Type Thermal Diffusion Columns for Use in Radiocarbon Dating
The optimum operating conditions providing minimum run-time and running costs have been studied theoretically for a thermal diffusion plant to be used for the enrichment of the radiocarbon isotope from finite sample size. The calculations are based on a simple approximate model of the enrichment process, regarding the isotope separation column as operating under quasi-stationary state conditions. The temporal variation of the isotope accumulation…
