  • Evaluation of radiocarbon dates from the Middle Holocene hunter-gatherer cemetery Khuzhir-Nuge XIV, Lake Baikal, Siberia

    Open Access•A W Weber, Andrzej Weber et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Archaeological Science•2005•Cited by: 15•References: 6

  • What Was the Viking Age and When did it Happen? A View from Orkney

    James H Barrett, James Barrett et al.•ARTICLE•Norwegian Archaeological Review•2000•Cited by: 15•References: 69

The Viking Age was an important watershed in European history, characterized by the centralization of authority, the adoption of Christian ideology, the growth of market trade, the intensification of production and the development of urbanism. Together, these phenomena mark the beginning of Scandinavian state formation. However, the dates at which each occurred - and the unequal rates at which different state attributes were adopted in 'cores' an…

  • The IAEA 14 C Intercomparison Exercise 1990

Open Access•Kazimierz Rozanski, Willibald Stichler et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 96•References: 10

As a follow-up to the meeting of experts convened at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in February 1989, and the International 14 C Workshop held in Glasgow in September 1989, the 14 C Quality Assurance Program was formulated. In a joint effort of several radiocarbon teams and IAEA staff, we have prepared a set of five new intercomparison materials. These are natural materials frequently used by radiocarbon laboratories. The materials…

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Copper-Preserved Organics

    Open Access•R P Beukens, L A Pavlish et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 10•References: 13

The small but vital role of 14 C dating in archaeometric research is clearly shown in the copper project reported herein. The 14 C ages place a time perspective on the “Old Copper Culture Complex,” substantiating early Libby dates that had been questioned. The respective roles of INAA, PGE and Pb isotope work are briefly summarized. A long tradition of heat treatment from Paleoindian stone to Archaic copper is suggested

  • Radiocarbon Dating with Tandem Electrostatic Accelerators

    Open Access•H E Gove, David Elmore et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 12

An MP tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at the University of Rochester has been employed since May 1977 to detect 14 C in various terrestrial samples. The carbon sample sizes required are 1mg or less. Dating accuracies based on reproducibility now approach (± 80 years). Measurements have been made on 1850 wood, Australian sucrose, a carbon sample from Mt Shasta, a baby woolly mammoth, and an Egyptian bull mummy wrapping
