The Younger Dryas and Preboreal landscape in the Moervaart area (northwestern Belgium) and the apparent decrease in human occupation
Climate impact on ecosystem changes and human responses during the Last Glacial and Early Holocene
Impacts of palaeoclimate change 60 000–8000 years ago on humans and their environments in Europe
Hunter-gatherer responses to the changing environment of the Moervaart palaeolake (Nw Belgium) during the Late Glacial and Early Holocene
Reconstructing Phreatic Palaeogroundwater Levels in a Geoarchaeological Context
The complex debate on prehistoric settlement decisions is no longer tackled from a purely archaeological perspective but from a more landscape‐oriented manner combined with archaeological evidence. Therefore, reconstruction of several components of the former landscape is needed. Here, we focus on the reconstruction of the groundwater table based on modeling. The depth of the phreatic aquifer influences, for example, soil formation processes and …
Beyond the unknown
A multidisciplinary approach to reconstructing Late Glacial and Early Holocene landscapes
Radiocarbon chronology and the correlation of hunter–gatherer sociocultural change with abrupt palaeoclimate change
Absolute Dating ( 14 C and OSL) of the Formation of Coversand Ridges Occupied by Prehistoric Hunter-Gatherers in NW Belgium
Based on radiocarbon and optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) results obtained in the last 5 yr, this paper discusses the absolute chronology of the formation of one of the largest sand dunes within NW Belgium, the Great Ridge of Maldegem-Stekene. Multiproxy analysis of 6 sedimentary sequences points to a complex formation history covering the entire Late Glacial. Dry phases, characterized by eolian deflation and sedimentation, alternated with…
Diversity and palaeoecological significance of non-pollen palynomorph assemblages in East African lake sediments
Diversity and palaeoecological significance of non-pollen palynomorph assemblages in East African lake sediments
In tropical Africa the palaeoecological visibility of (pre)historical human impact on natural ecosystems is strongly impeded by a dominant signature of climate change at decade-to-century and millennial scales. Better knowledge of the relative magnitude of past human impact is, however, instrumental to properly assess the resilience, and recovery potential, of Africa's natural ecosystems. In this study, we combined taxonomic, ecological and palae…
First Discovery of Black Mulberry ( Morus nigra L.) Pollen in a Late Bronze Age Well at Sint-Gillis-Waas (Flanders, Belgium)
First Discovery of Black Mulberry ( Morus nigra L.) Pollen in a Late Bronze Age Well at Sint-Gillis-Waas (Flanders, Belgium)
During the palynological investigation of the fill of a Late Bronze Age well on the archaeological site of Sint-Gillis-Waas/Kluizemolen (Flanders, Belgium), a black mulberry (Morus nigra L.) pollen grain was identified. Although this find still represents the only evidence available, it could imply that the tree was grown locally in late prehistoric times. Macrobotanical remains of black mulberry (especially seeds) are only known as Roman introdu…
