  • Mapping study for health emergency and disaster risk management competencies and curricula

Open Access•Kevin Kei Ching Hung, Makiko K MacDermot et al.•ARTICLE•Globalization and Health•2024

BACKGROUND: With the increasing threat of hazardous events at local, national, and global levels, an effective workforce for health emergency and disaster risk management (Health EDRM) in local, national, and international communities is urgently needed. However, there are no universally accepted competencies and curricula for Health EDRM. This study aimed to identify Health EDRM competencies and curricula worldwide using literature reviews and a…

  • Health Disparity Resulting from the Effect of Built Environment on Temperature-Related Mortality in a Subtropical Urban Setting

Open Access•Zhe Huang, Emily Ying Yang Chan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Whereas previous studies have assessed the overall health impact of temperature in Hong Kong, the aim of this study was to investigate whether the health impact is modified by local temperature of small geographic units, which may be related to the diverse socioeconomic characteristics of these units. The effects of local temperature on non-accidental and cause-specific mortality were analyzed using Bayesian spatial models at a small-area level, …

  • Challenges of Data Availability and Use in Conducting Health-EDRM Research in a Post-Covid-19 World

Open Access•Emily Ying Yang Chan, Debarati Guha‐sapir et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2022

Disasters disrupt communication channels, infrastructure, and overburden health systems. This creates unique challenges to the functionality of surveillance tools, data collection systems, and information sharing platforms. The WHO Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (Health-EDRM) framework highlights the need for appropriate data collection, data interpretation, and data use from individual, community, and global levels. The COVID-19 c…

  • CCOUC Ethnic Minority Health Project

Open Access•Kevin Kei Ching Hung, Makiko K MacDermot et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Disasters disproportionately impact poor and marginalised populations due to greater vulnerability induced by various risk determinants, such as compromised living conditions, language barriers, and limited resources for disaster risk management. Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management (Health EDRM) emphasises a people- and community-centred approach for building stronger capacities in communities and countries since community members are o…

  • Health Workforce Development in Health Emergency and Disaster Risk Management

Open Access•Kevin Kei Ching Hung, Sonoe Mashino et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030 placed human health at the centre of disaster risk reduction, calling for the global community to enhance local and national health emergency and disaster risk management (Health EDRM). The Health EDRM Framework, published in 2019, describes the functions required for comprehensive disaster risk management across prevention, preparedness, readiness, response, and recovery to improve the r…

  • Clustering of Socioeconomic Data in Hong Kong for Planning Better Community Health Protection

Open Access•Zhe Huang, Emily Ying Yang Chan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The concept of socioeconomic vulnerability has made a substantial contribution to the understanding and conceptualization of health risk. To assess the spatial distribution of multi-dimensional socioeconomic vulnerability in an urban context, a vulnerability assessment scheme was proposed to guide decision-making in disaster resilience and sustainable urban development to reduce health risk. A two-stage approach was applied in Hong Kong to identi…

  • The Evolution in Anxiety and Depression with the Progression of the Pandemic in Adult Populations from Eight Countries and Four Continents

Open Access•Mélissa Généreux, Philip J Schluter et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

Nearly a year after the classification of the COVID-19 outbreak as a global pandemic, it is clear that different factors have contributed to an increase in psychological disorders, including public health measures that infringe on personal freedoms, growing financial losses, and conflicting messages. This study examined the evolution of psychosocial impacts with the progression of the pandemic in adult populations from different countries and con…

  • Reflection of Challenges and Opportunities within the Covid-19 Pandemic to Include Biological Hazards into DRR Planning

Open Access•Emily Ying Yang Chan, Caroline Dubois et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

COVID-19 has reinforced the need to revisit the integration of health within disaster risk reduction (DRR) strategies for biological hazards in a system-wide approach. In November 2020, DRR experts attended the Asia-Pacific Partnership for Disaster Risk Reduction (APP-DRR) Forum to share progress and learnings in the areas of health system resilience, data management, residual risk management, risk communication, digital literacy, and knowledge p…

  • Report of Alliance of International Science Organizations on Disaster Risk Reduction (Anso-DRR) Conference 2020

    Open Access•Emily Ying Yang Chan, C S Wong et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

This article summarizes the proceedings of the four-session meeting (webinar) conducted by the Alliance of International Science Organizations on Disaster Risk Reduction (ANSO-DRR) on 18 May 2020. ANSO-DRR is an international, nonprofit and nongovernmental scientific alliance bringing together academies of science, research organizations and universities which share a strong interest in disaster risk reduction in the regions along the land-based …

  • One Virus, Four Continents, Eight Countries

Open Access•Mélissa Généreux, Philip J Schluter et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

The novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic brought about several features that increased the sense of fear and confusion, such as quarantine and financial losses among other stressors, which may have led to adverse psychosocial outcomes. The influence of such stressors took place within a broader sociocultural context that needs to be considered. The objective was to examine how the psychological response to the pandemic varied across…

  • Wintertime CO2 Emission from Soils of Northeastern Siberia

    Open Access•S A Zimov, I P Semiletov et al.•ARTICLE•ARCTIC•1993

The emission of C02 from northeastern Siberian soil was estimated for the period December 1989 to February 1990. Concentrations of air CO2 near the ground and 1 m above the snow cover were measured by an infrared gas analyzer. Fluxes of CO2 across the snow cover were calculated from the differences of these two values and the predetermined CO2 transfer coefficients at various flux rates through a layer of snow. Temperature and moisture content of…

  • Radiocarbon in Particulate Matter from the Eastern Sub-Arctic Pacific Ocean

    Open Access•Ellen R M Druffel, Susumu Honjo et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1986•Cited by: 3•References: 20

Carbon isotope ratios were measured in organic and inorganic carbon of settling particulate matter collected with a sediment trap at Ocean Station “P” in the Gulf of Alaska from March to October, 1983. Dissolved inorganic carbon (DIG) in surface sea water collected during two different seasons in 1984 were analyzed using large gas proportional counters and revealed a minimum seasonal Δ 14 C variation of 14‰. Results show that the Δ 14 C of calciu…
