  • The Site of Verrebroek ‘Dok’ and its Contribution to the Absolute Dating of the Mesolithic in the Low Countries

    Open Access•Mark J Y Van Strydonck, Philippe Crombé et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 4•References: 2

The wetland site of Verrebroek “Dok” situated in northern Belgium is one of the largest and best dated locations of Mesolithic material in northwestern Europe. Salvage excavations organized since 1992 at this large, unstratified open-air settlement have revealed more than 50 spatially independent artifact concentrations with traces of numerous fireplaces. Single entity dating of charred hazelnut shells from surface-hearths and charcoal from heart…

  • The 14 C Chronology of the Son Mas Sanctuary Site (Valldemosa, Mallorca, Spain)

    Open Access•Mark J Y Van Strydonck, William H Waldren et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1997•References: 11

With >40 14 C dates, mainly on bones and charcoal, the site at Son Mas is the only megalithic sanctuary on the Balearic Islands that has been dated by 14 C in detail. Although soil erosion made stratigraphy difficult and the monument was cleaned out regularly during its long use, the results demonstrate that the site was occupied from the Pretalayotic (Chalcolithic) until the Roman period. The aim of this study was not only to date the constructi…

  • Problems in Dating Stone-Age Settlements on Sandy Soils

    Open Access•Mark J Y Van Strydonck, Jean-Pierre Van Roeyen et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Cited by: 4•References: 4

Archaeological sites on sandy soils often suffer from dislocation of artifacts and datable materials. Because stratigraphy and context lose their meaning in such cases, all 14 C dates in this study were put in a dispersion diagram regardless of the sample origin. We drew conclusions about the chronology of the site by comparing this diagram with archaeological analysis of the artifacts and the evolution of the landscape. The dating series, as wel…

  • Dating Precolumbian Museum Objects

Open Access•Mark J Y Van Strydonck, Klaas Van Der Borg et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 2•References: 5

We have radiocarbon dated some Precolumbian artifacts. We have used both conventional beta counting and AMS to date textiles, bamboo from weaving looms, a feather carpet and straw from a clay mask. We discuss the particular problems in sample pretreatment

  • Radiocarbon Dating of Lime Fractions and Organic Material from Buildings

Open Access•Mark J Y Van Strydonck, Klaas Van Der Borg et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1992•Cited by: 26•References: 5

We have dated carbonate fractions and organic material from different types of mortar from two sites in Belgium. We demonstrate the difficulties in obtaining good dates from carbonate samples. We also discuss the need for new types of dating material when the mortar comes from contaminated and disturbed sites, where even charcoal can yield aberrant results

  • Isotopic Fractionation of Oxygen and Carbon in Lime Mortar Under Natural Environmental Conditions

Mark J Y Van Strydonck, Michel Dupas et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1989•Cited by: 21

The rate of calcite formation and the isotopic fractionation in lime mortar during the process of mortar setting were examined. The diffusion rate of atmospheric CO 2 in the sample is the rate-controlling step of the chemical reaction. A Rayleigh diffusion in the mortar causes an enrichment of 13 C and 18 O in the samples
