  • A Study of KF 3 − Attenuation in an RFQ Gas Cell for 41 Ca AMS

    Open Access•X-L Zhao, A E Litherland et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2013•Cited by: 1•References: 12

Guided by simulations using SIMION 8.1, a series of modifications were made to an experimental version of an Isobar Separator for Anions (ISA). The resulting improved version of the ISA provides a means of re-energizing the ions after they are cooled by gas collisions as they pass through the gas-filled radiofrequency quadrupoles (RFQ), and also provides higher transmission efficiencies. Reinvestigation of the separation of CaF 3 − and KF 3 − wit…

  • The Low-Energy Isobar Separator for Anions

    Open Access•W E Kieser, John Eliades et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2010•Cited by: 1•References: 14

The suppression of interferences from atomic and molecular isobars is a key requirement for the extension of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) to the analysis of new cosmogenic isotopes and for increasing the range of applications for small AMS systems. In earlier work, it was shown that unwanted isobars can be eliminated by anion-gas reactions (Litherland et al. 2007). Recently, a prototype system in which such reactions could be applied to io…

  • Developments in Radiocarbon Technologies

    Open Access•Pavel P Povinec, A E Litherland et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2009•Cited by: 6•References: 204

We review developments in radiocarbon measuring techniques from the Libby counter through proportional gas counters and liquid scintillation spectrometers to the more recent developments of accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS), followed by a coupling of gas chromatography with AMS for compound-specific 14 C analyses. While during the first 60 yr of 14 C measurements beta counting, specifically gas counting, was the dominant technique, in the futur…

  • Radiocarbon Dating with Tandem Electrostatic Accelerators

    Open Access•H E Gove, David Elmore et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1980•Cited by: 1•References: 12

An MP tandem Van de Graaff accelerator at the University of Rochester has been employed since May 1977 to detect 14 C in various terrestrial samples. The carbon sample sizes required are 1mg or less. Dating accuracies based on reproducibility now approach (± 80 years). Measurements have been made on 1850 wood, Australian sucrose, a carbon sample from Mt Shasta, a baby woolly mammoth, and an Egyptian bull mummy wrapping
