Emergency Excavation of a Prehistoric Roundhouse, Mullans Wood, Kilcoy, Inverness-shire
An archaeological excavation of a prehistoric roundhouse was carried out at Mullans Wood, Kilcoy, Inverness-shire by AOC Archaeology in March 2018 in advance of woodland replanting. Approximately one half of the roundhouse was investigated, revealing that the structure comprised a rubble bank supported by large boulders with evidence for an internal ring of post-holes. A small perforated stone disc was recovered from interior deposits along with …
Storm damage at Craig Phadrig hillfort, Inverness: Results of the Emergency Archaeological Evaluation
In January 2015 severe winter storms caused substantial damage to Craig Phadrig fort (Scheduled Monument 2892) after two wind-blown trees exposed a section of the inner rampart. Prior to consolidation and reinstatement, Scheduled Monument Consent was granted for an archaeological evaluation of the damaged area. This revealed three principal phases of construction, the earliest a massive timber-laced wall burnt in the 4th–3rd century bc. The upper…
Bayesian Modeling of an Early Bronze Age Cemetery at Armadale, Isle of Skye, Scotland
Excavations from 2009–2010 in Armadale, Isle of Skye, Scotland, encountered a burial site with seven cists, pits containing cremation burials, a kerbed cairn, and a small stone and post circle. Twenty-one radiocarbon measurements were taken from single entities of wood charcoal, carbonized residue on pottery, and cremated human bone. A site chronology has been constructed using a Bayesian approach that considers the stratigraphic contexts and fea…
