  • A Modern Multicentennial Record of Radiocarbon Variability From an Exactly Dated Bivalve Chronology at the Tree Nob Site (Alaska Coastal Current)

    Open Access•David C Edge, Alan D Wanamaker et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2023•References: 58

Quantifying the marine radiocarbon reservoir effect, offsets (ΔR), and ΔR variability over time is critical to improving dating estimates of marine samples while also providing a proxy of water mass dynamics. In the northeastern Pacific, where no high-resolution time series of ΔR has yet been established, we sampled radiocarbon ( 14 C) from exactly dated growth increments in a multicentennial chronology of the long-lived bivalve, Pacific geoduck …

  • Life histories and niche dynamics in late Quaternary proboscideans from midwestern North America

    Open Access•Chris Widga, Gregory W L Hodgins et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2021

Stable isotopes of mammoths and mastodons have the potential to illuminate ecological changes in late Pleistocene landscapes and megafaunal populations as these species approached extinction. The ecological factors at play in this extinction remain unresolved, but isotopes of bone collagen (δ 13 C, δ 15 N) and tooth enamel (δ 13 C, δ 18 O, 87 Sr/ 86 Sr) from midwestern North America are leveraged to examine ecological and behavioral changes that …

  • Hydroclimate variability from western Iberia (Portugal) during the Holocene

    Open Access•Diana L Thatcher, Alan D Wanamaker et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 20

Iberia is predicted under future warming scenarios to be increasingly impacted by drought. While it is known that this region has experienced multiple intervals of enhanced aridity over the Holocene, additional hydroclimate-sensitive records from Iberia are necessary to place current and future drying into a broader perspective. Toward that end, we present a multi-proxy composite record from six well-dated and overlapping speleothems from Buraca …

  • The potential of the marine bivalve mollusc Glossus humanus (L.) as a sclerochronological archive

    Open Access•David J Reynolds, Chris A Richardson et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•References: 6

In order to assess its potential as a sclerochronological archive, we present statistical and geochemical analyses of internal growth increment series in shells of the heart cockle Glossus humanus (L.), a large marine bivalve. The investigated samples were collected from Loch Sunart and the Sound of Mull, Scotland, United Kingdom. High-resolution stable isotope (δ 18 O) analyses and radiocarbon ( 14 C) determinations indicated that G. humanus for…

  • Reconstructions of surface ocean conditions from the northeast Atlantic and Nordic seas during the last millennium

    Open Access•Laura Cunningham, Laura K Cunningham et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•Cited by: 4•References: 7

We undertake the first comprehensive effort to integrate North Atlantic marine climate records for the last millennium, highlighting some key components common within this system at a range of temporal and spatial scales. In such an approach, careful consideration needs to be given to the complexities inherent to the marine system. Composites therefore need to be hydrographically constrained and sensitive to both surface water mass variability an…

  • The Marine Radiocarbon Bomb Pulse Across the Temperate North Atlantic

    James D Scourse, Alan D Wanamaker et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2012•References: 20

Marine radiocarbon bomb-pulse time histories of annually resolved archives from temperate regions have been underexploited. We present here series of Δ 14 C excess from known-age annual increments of the long-lived bivalve mollusk Arctica islandica from 4 sites across the coastal North Atlantic (German Bight, North Sea; Troms⊘, north Norway; Siglufjordur, north Icelandic shelf; Grimsey, north Icelandic shelf) combined with published series from G…

  • Very Long-Lived Mollusks Confirm 17th Century AD Tephra-Based Radiocarbon Reservoir Ages for North Icelandic Shelf Waters

    Open Access•Alan D Wanamaker, Jan Heinemeier et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2008•Cited by: 4•References: 46

Marine sediment records from the north Icelandic shelf, which rely on tephrochronological age models, reveal an average ΔR (regional deviation from the modeled global surface ocean reservoir age) of approximately 150 yr for the last millennium. These tephra-based age models have not hitherto been independently verified. Here, we provide data that corroborate ΔR values derived from these sediment archives. We sampled the youngest portion (ontogene…
