  • Variation of Surface Radiocarbon in the North Pacific During Summer Season 2004–2016

    Open Access•T Aramaki, S Nakaoka et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•References: 25

Surface radiocarbon (Δ 14 C) in the North Pacific has been monitored using a commercial volunteer observation ship since the early 2000s. Here we report the temporal and spatial variations in Δ 14 C in the summer surface water when the surface ocean is vertically stratified over a 13-yr period, 2004–2016. The long-term Δ 14 C decreasing trend after the late 1970s in the subtropical region has continued to the present and the rate of decrease of t…

  • A Suitable procedure for preparing of water Samples used in Radiocarbon Intercomparison

    Open Access•H A Takahashi, M Minami et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2019•Cited by: 2•References: 19

We studied a suitable procedure for preparing of water samples used in radiocarbon intercomparisons involving dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). The water samples must have inter-batch consistency and stable 14 C concentrations and no sterilizing agent (e.g., HgCl 2 ) should be added, in order to avoid the production of hazardous material. Six water samples, containing widely different amounts and types of salts, DIC, and 14 C concentrations (1–10…

  • Circulation in the Northern Japan Sea Studied Chiefly with Radiocarbon

    Open Access•T Aramaki, T Senjyu et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2007•Cited by: 2•References: 15

Radiocarbon concentrations in the northernmost region of the Japan Sea were observed during the summer of 2002. The averaged surface δ 14 C (above 100 m depth) was 52 ± 8%, which is significantly higher compared with the values of the Pacific Ocean and Okhotsk Sea. The δ 14 C in the deep water decreased with density, and the minimum value was −70%. By analyzing 14 C and other hydrographic data, we found that i) the Tsushima Warm Current Water rea…

  • Distribution of Radiocarbon in the Southwestern North Pacific

    Open Access•T Aramaki, T Mizushima et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 6•References: 15

Radiocarbon measurements in seawater samples taken at six stations in the southwestern North Pacific visited during the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) 1997 Pacific Ocean Expedition were carried out at the accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) facility of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI). Three stations were located close to GEOSECS stations, and three were in the vicinity of Bikini and Enewetak Atolls, which may be infl…
