  • Carbon-14 Chronology of Mortar from Excavations in the Medieval Church of Saint-Bénigne, Dijon, France

C Malone, Salvatore Valastro et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Field Archaeology•1980•Cited by: 4

This study indicates, as the recent Carbon-14 analysis of lime mortar from the Episcopal Basilica at Stobi, Yugoslavia, that Carbon-14 mortar analysis is a valuable tool for dating successive phases of construction in historical monuments. At the Gothic church of Saint-Bénigne in Dijon, France, Carbon-14 analysis of lime mortar verified the archaeological discovery of the remains of four documented churches beneath the present building. Most impo…

  • An Improved Procedure for Wet Oxidation of the 14 C Nbs Oxalic Acid Standard

    Open Access•S Valastro, L S Land et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1977•Cited by: 8•References: 7

An improved procedure for wet combustion of 14 C NBS oxalic acid standard has been devised which gives consistent high carbon yields and average δ 13 C values of —19.1‰. The principal cause of fractionation in earlier attempts to prepare CO 2 by the wet oxidation method was the inexact nature of the end-point. The new procedure employs a chocolate-brown end-point by adding 5ml more of the sulfuric acid-potassium permanganate solution after the in…
