  • Protocol Development for Purification and Characterization of Sub-Fossil Insect Chitin for Stable Isotopic Analysis and Radiocarbon Dating

    Open Access•G W L Hodgins, J L Thorpe et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 12

Reliable radiocarbon dating depends upon well-defined samples. We have been investigating whether or not reliable 14 C dates can be obtained directly from sub-fossil insect cuticle or biochemical fractions derived from it. Initial carbon and nitrogen stable isotope measurements on sub-fossil insect chitin from species with known feeding behaviors found within a single site (St Bees, Cumbria) clustered in a manner reminiscent of trophic level effe…

  • Towards a Radiocarbon Chronology of the Late-Glacial

    Open Access•M J C Walker, C Bryant et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 4•References: 26

This paper outlines a dating program designed to test the reproducibility of radiocarbon dates on different materials of Late-Glacial age (plant macrofossils, fossil beetle remains, and the “humic” and “humin” chemical fractions of limnic sediments) using a combination of radiometric (beta counting) and accelerator mass spectrometry (AMS) techniques. The results have implications for the design of sampling strategies and for the development of im…
