  • Timing and intensity of groundwater movement during Egyptian Sahara pluvial periods by U-series analysis of secondary U in ores and carbonates

    Open Access•J K Osmond, Adel A Dabous•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2004

Wet climatic episodes are known to have prevailed in the Egyptian Sahara several times during the late Quaternary, most recently during the Holocene 8000 yr ago. Earlier wet episodes have been recognized as having occurred during the past 300,000 yr and have been dated by U-series methods in speleothems and in lake travertines. We show here that the times of enhanced groundwater movement can also be determined by 230 Th/ 234 U dating of secondary…

  • Radiocarbon and Uranium-Series Dating of the Plitvice Lakes Travertines

    Open Access•Dušan Srdoč, J K Osmond et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1994•Cited by: 4•References: 51

Radiocarbon and uranium-series ages of the calcareous deposits of the Plitvice Lakes show that travertines were deposited during three warm, humid, interglacial oxygen isotope stages. According to our measurements, only calcite crystals or crystal aggregates represent reliable material for both 230 Th/ 234 U and 234 U/ 238 /U dating. Compact old travertine in the form of sandstone is less reliable; it can be dated by both methods provided that it…
