  • Decadal-scale autumn temperature reconstruction back to AD 1580 inferred from the varved sediments of Lake Silvaplana (Southeastern Swiss Alps)

Open Access•Alex Blass, Christian Bigler et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2007

A quantitative high-resolution autumn (September–November) temperature reconstruction for the southeastern Swiss Alps back to AD 1580 is presented here. We used the annually resolved biogenic silica (diatoms) flux derived from the accurately dated and annually sampled sediments of Lake Silvaplana (46°27′N, 9°48′E, 1800 m a.s.l.). The biogenic silica flux smoothed by means of a 9-yr running mean was calibrated ( r =0.70, p

  • Quantifying human-induced eutrophication in Swiss mountain lakes since AD 1800 using diatoms

Open Access•Christian Bigler, Lucien von Gunten et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•References: 6

Sedimentary diatom assemblages from three lakes in the southeastern Swiss Alps were analysed at high temporal resolution since AD 1800. Altered land-use patterns, increasing population and exploitation through tourism are clearly reflected in annually laminated sediments of Lej da San Murezzan (Lake St Moritz) and Lej da Silvaplauna (Lake Silvaplana). Diatom assemblages originally dominated by Cyclotella taxa are replaced by taxa indicating highe…

  • How stable are twentieth-century calibration models? A high-resolution summer temperature reconstruction for the eastern Swiss Alps back to AD 1580 derived from proglacial varved sediments

    Open Access•Alex Blass, Martín Grosjean et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 6

We found a significant positive correlation between local summer air temperature (May-September) and the annual sediment mass accumulation rate (MAR) in Lake Silvaplana (46°N, 9°E, 1800 m a.s.l.) during the twentieth century (r = 0.69, p < 0.001 for decadal smoothed series). Sediment trap data (2001-2005) confirm this relation with exceptionally high particle yields during the hottest summer of the last 140 years in 2003. On this base we develope…

  • Evidence of Lateglacial and Holocene climatic change and human impact in eastern Anatolia

    Open Access•Lucia Wick, Genry Lemcke et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2003•Cited by: 52•References: 9

Annually laminated sediments from Lake Van, spanning about 13000 varve years, were sampled for stable-isotopic, geochemical, pollen and charcoal analyses in order to find evidence of past regional climatic changes and human impact in the semi-arid region of eastern Anatolia, Turkey. The Lateglacial period was cold and dry, with steppe vegetation and saline lake water. During the Younger Dryas the lake level dropped dramatically, and the vegetatio…

  • Analysis and dating of Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn sediment profiles from the Vitznau basin of Lake Lucerne (Switzerland) / Analyse et datation de profils en Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn de sédiments lacustres provenant du lac …

Open Access•Lorenzo Spadini, Michael Sturm et al.•ARTICLE•Revue de géographie alpine•2003

Two parallel sediment cores were recovered in the Vitznau basin of Lake Lucerne, Switzerland, were analysed for % dry weight and for Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn. The dry weight and the four metal profiles show two anomalies at 12 cm and at 39 cm core depth pointing to anomalous sedimentation events. The first anomaly (at 1 2 cm) can be related to the rock fall of the Biirgenstock at Obermatt which occurred in two phases in 1963 and 1964. The second anomaly (a…

  • Interactions of climate and land use documented in the varved sediments of Seebergsee in the Swiss Alps

    Open Access•Sonja Hausmann, André F Lotter et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2002•Cited by: 3•References: 4

This paper presents a multiproxy high-resolution study of the past 2600 years for Seebergsee, a small Swiss lake with varved sediments at the present tree-line ecotone. The laminae were identified as varves by a numerical analysis of diatom counts in the thin-sections. The hypothesis of two diatom blooms per year was corroborated by the 210Pb and 137Cs chronology. A period of intensive pasturing during the ‘Little Ice Age’ between ad 1346 and ad …

  • Dating of Lake and Loess Sediments

    Open Access•Juerg Beer, Michael Sturm•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•References: 9

Lake and loess sediments represent archives that record important information about the iocal, regional and global climate conditions in the past. Lake sediments consist of autochthonous particles formed by biogeochemical processes within the lake and allochthonous particles brought into the lake from the catchment area. After deposition, the stratigraphy of the sediment can be altered by chemical, physical and biological processes. Under favored…
