Geomorphology of the Liera catchment (Dolomites, NE Italy)
Geomorphological field surveys and mapping have been carried out in a catchment of the Dolomites (eastern Italian Alps) as part of a research project aiming at the assessment of sediment availability for mass wasting in mountain environments. The study area is the Liera catchment which was severely affected by a high-intensity, regional-scale storm named ‘Vaia’ (27–30 October 2018), which induced relevant morphological changes, caused a major flo…
Disentangling the stratigraphic architecture of the Rivoli-Avigliana end moraine system (Western Alps, NW Italy)
The Rivoli-Avigliana end moraine system (Italian Western Alps) hosts an important stratigraphic archive of Pleistocene glaciations. A new geological map provides a 3D architecture of the system that reveals a complex architecture of glacial, alluvial and lacustrine units. Six glacial units were recognized. During the deposition of the four older glacial units (Early-Middle Pleistocene) the morphology of the valley outlet had a different drainage …
Large landslides in the Alpine valleys of the Giudicarie and Schio-Vicenza tectonic domains (NE Italy)
A comprehensive geomorphological and structural mapping of the largest landslides in the central-eastern Southern Alps (NE Italy) is presented. Their occurrence in this Alpine sector is discussed in relation with structural geological features (bedding and faults), which are largely conditioned by the Giudicarie and Schio-Vicenza regional fault systems. Tectonic rock damaging here coexists with high relief stored energy and active deformation, wh…
Hunter-gatherers across the great Adriatic-Po region during the Last Glacial Maximum
An overview of Alpine and Mediterranean palaeogeography, terrestrial ecosystems and climate history during MIS 3 with focus on the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition
Sedimentary evidence of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) during the last glacial maximum in the Venetian-Friulian plain (NE Italy)
An overview of Alpine and Mediterranean palaeogeography, terrestrial ecosystems and climate history during MIS 3 with focus on the Middle to Upper Palaeolithic transition
This paper summarizes the current state of knowledge about the millennial scale climate variability characterizing Marine Isotope Stage 3 (MIS 3) in S-Europe and the Mediterranean area and its effects on terrestrial ecosystems. The sequence of Dansgaard-Oeschger events, as recorded by Greenland ice cores and recognizable in isotope profiles from speleothems and high-resolution palaeoecological records, led to dramatic variations in glacier extent…
Geology of Piemonte region (NW Italy, Alps–Apennines interference zone)
The geological map of Piemonte Region (Italy) is a graphic representation of the geology of the region, grounded on a large geodatabase, that can be also browsed as an interactive scalable map (GeoPiemonte Map) using a WebGIS application. The Map, produced at 1:250,000 scale, is the first original release of the ‘GeoPiemonte Map’ project. The geological data represented on the map derive from a thorough revision of available geological maps and l…
Evaluation of Preparation Methods in Radiocarbon Dating of Old Wood
From the early days of radiocarbon dating, the standard sample treatment has involved removal of contamination from carbonates and humic acids by washes in acid and base, respectively. A modification of this acid-base-acid (ABA) method has been suggested, especially for material older than 20,000 yr. However, the criticism of ABA and application of a more aggressive oxidizing method, such as wet oxidation (ABOX) or cellulose extraction, might onl…
Tectonic and Climatic Inferences from the Terrace Staircase in the Meduna Valley, Eastern Southern Alps, NE Italy
Results of stratigraphic and morphotectonic analyses on fluvial terraces at the outlet of the Meduna valley in the eastern Southern Alps are used to investigate on the tectonics and paleoclimate. The Meduna valley, prone to destructive earthquakes, belongs to the front of the eastern Southern Alps, a south-verging fold and thrust belt in evolution from the Middle Miocene to the present, constructed by ENE–WSW striking, SSE-verging medium to low-a…
Late Quaternary glaciations and connections to the piedmont plain in the prealpine environment
The onset of the Last Glacial Maximum in the southern side of the Alps
Evidence of a two-fold glacial advance during the last glacial maximum in the Tagliamento end moraine system (eastern Alps)
The glacial history of the Tagliamento morainic amphitheater (southeastern Alpine foreland, Italy) during the last glacial maximum (LGM) has been reconstructed by means of a geological survey and drillings, radiocarbon dating and pollen analysis in the amphitheater and in the sandur. Two phases of glacial culmination, separated by a distinct recession, are responsible for glacial landforms and related sediments in the outer part of the amphitheat…
