Bottom-up characterization of geologic methane emissions in the San Juan Basin in the southwestern USA
Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry and global warming. The current global methane budget has large uncertainties, and a better understanding of the budget would help to guide strategies for reducing anthropogenic emissions to fight climate change. Natural geologic methane emissions are a particularly poorly constrained source, with top-down estimates from 14C in ice cores suggesting much lower…
An automated processing line for the extraction of dissolved inorganic carbon from water for radiocarbon analysis
At ANSTO, we have developed an automated dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) processing line, known as A-DIC, designed to sequentially process 10 water samples for radiocarbon analysis without any operator intervention. The A-DIC works at ambient pressure using helium (He) gas as a carrier. It includes a water pump capable of drawing adjustable sample volumes between 22-180 mL into a 250 mL reaction vessel. Upon the addition of 5 mL of phosphoric ac…
Aspects of Zoroastrian Traditions in Nabataean Petra
It is well-known that empires leave behind cultural footprints that linger for millennia. Influences in language, religion, art, and architecture are strongest. This being the case, it is surprising that there is little mention of Persian influences in southern Jordan because the Achaemenid Persians held sway over the region from the early fifth to the mid-fourth century BCE, and Artaxerxes II himself promoted the Zoroastrian cult of Anahita thro…
Celtic spirituality
Celtic Christian spirituality has enjoyed renewed interest at the turn of the current millennium. Existing literature focusses on its theology and culture. This study considers its impact on mental health and wellbeing. Celtic spirituality (as henceforth termed) is nowadays led by dispersed modern monastic communities, notably Iona, Corrymeela, Northumbria, St Chad or Aidan and Hilda. Interpretative phenomenological analysis within a wider holist…

Conventionally Heated Microfurnace for the Graphitization of Microgram-Sized Carbon Samples
A new type of miniaturized, externally heated graphitization reaction furnace, the microconventional furnace (MCF), was constructed following our development of the laser heated furnace (LHF). The MCF is comprised of a gas reactor, a cold finger cooling system, and a compact resistive heater, which can raise the temperature of the hot finger to 850°C. The gas reactor is provided with three integrated valves to connect with the hydrogen/vacuum man…

Chapter Six. Aristocracy Or Democracy? Eukleia And Eunomia Between The Gods
Two of the most popular personifications in the vase paintings made during the Peloponnesian War are Eukleia and Eunomia , the personifications of Good Repute and Good Order. This chapter surveys the identity and visual representations of each of these personifications separately, and then reassess their appearances together in art and cult. Eukleia represents the personal qualities that brought a person a good reputation, as well as the reputati…
Chapter Two. Names Or Comments? The Birth Of Political Personification In Greece
As the goal of this chapter is an understanding of how and why Classical Athenian artists created personifications, one must start with the techniques of presentation. Therefore, it begins with a discussion of ancient rhetorical terms related to personification. A discussion of the role of personifications in myth and cult is then warranted by the fact that Athenian artists begin to introduce personifications in the context of myth. The chapter c…
Chapter Four. Goddess Before Personification? Right And Retribution
Themis and Nemesis are well known in the arts and cults of Archaic Greece. Themis and Nemesis are interconnected in myth perhaps before they are joined in cult at Rhamnous. Nemesis appears first in Attic art at approximately the same time as Kratinos' play, noted above, when she received her long awaited temple at Rhamnous. By the fifth century nemesis had come to mean (divine) retribution warranted by righteous indignation, such as the punishmen…
Chapter One. Introduction
This introductory chapter of this book, which investigates the role of civic personifications-figures like Peitho and Hygieia-in Classical Athenian art and therefore directly addresses the questions about the Hamilton Vase and many similar questions about the role of personifications in the visual arts of Athens. Peitho and Hygieia are personifications, representations of abstractions in human form. The importance of these virtues in civic and pr…
Chapter Three. Humanising Greek Places And Spaces
This chapter explores three categories of local personifications: the family of Okeanos; other eponymous or name giving heroines of islands and cities, of which a special group are the Asopids; and Nereids. Okeanos and Tethys were children of Ge and Ouranos. Okeanos is labelled on two early Classical vases by Syriskos, both of which show him with his family but also with other figures whose presence is surprising. Aigina and her sisters, the daug…
Chapter Ten. The Mother Of Wealth
Athens' preoccupation with a Panhellenic peace-and the economic wealth that it would bring-is reflected in Athenian art. The actual eirene, however, eluded Athens. Ploutos was to be Eirene's gift that would save the people. An overview of the Greek attempts at peace will illuminate the historical circumstances that led to the popularity of Ploutos and his many mothers. Kephisodotos ' statue was copied on later gems and coins, as well as in the pa…
Chapter Five. The Independence Of Epithets
Virtues surround Aphrodite-the goddess of mixis or mingling, not restricted to sex, love, and marriage-in Attic images painted during the Peloponnesian War. Such virtues as Eudaimonia , Eutykhia, Harmonia, Hygieia, Paidia, and of course Peitho could represent personal virtues as well as public virtues, and might therefore be interpreted on either level, or both simultaneously, when they appear in art that functioned in public and private contexts…
Ethnographies of Diagnostic Work
The diverse studies of diagnostic work in this book give shape to a new view of diagnostic work. They highlight just how much more than individual cognitive capability is needed, the close relationship between analysis and intervention, the often implicit nature of diagnosis, and the fact that there are several degrees or levels of diagnostic work. Different knowledges, motivations, skills and forms of expertise are mobilised in often collaborati…

Bir Madhkur Project
This report provides an overview of the Bir Madhkur Project and summarizes recent fieldwork conducted at the site. Bir Madhkur lies in the foothills of Wadi Araba, northwest of Petra and along the Petra-Gaza trade route. The site, which was of economic and military significance through most of the Nabataean, Roman, and Byzantine periods, now centers upon the remains of a major Roman fort. As it once was an administrative center in the fairly isol…

Last Recorded Evidence For Megafauna At Wet Cave, Naracoorte, South Australia 45,000 Years Ago
Over 85 percent of Australian terrestrial vertebrate genera with a body mass greater than 44 kg became extinct during the late Pleistocene. These included all marsupials exceeding 100 kg (1 9 species) and 22 of the 38 species between 10 and 100 kg. Dwarfing occurred in many other species (Flannery 1990; Miller et al. 1999). The larger of these extinct animals have been categorised as megafauna

Initial results of the southeastern Wadi Araba, Jordan Geoarchaeological Study
Wadi Araba is a linear valley that follows the northeast-trending Dead Sea-Jordan transform (DST) fault zone ca. 165 km north from the Gulf of Aqaba to the escarpment overlooking the Southern Ghor of the Dead Sea. An archaeological survey and geologic investigation was conducted along the southeast 75 km of Wadi Araba during three field seasons. The geoarchaeological study focused on analyzing sediments and soil development at sites and air photo…
