  • Is palynology a credible climate proxy in the Subantarctic

Open Access•Nathalie Van der Putten, Cyriel Verbruggen et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2012•Citada por: 1•Referencias: 4

Pollen and spore analysis is the most successfully used palaeobotanical discipline for reconstructing Holocene vegetation and climate history throughout the world. Subantarctic islands are very specific areas. They are located in the circum-Antarctic Southern Ocean in latitudes that are under strong influence of the southern westerly winds, and are characterised by a treeless, phanerogam-poor flora. Palynological research on many of these islands…

  • Holocene palaeoecology and climate history of South Georgia (sub-Antarctica) based on a macrofossil record of bryophytes and seeds

Open Access•Nathalie Van der Putten, Herman Stieperaere et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2004•Citada por: 7•Referencias: 1

The results are presented of a detailed plant macrofossil analysis of a( 14 C dated Holocene organic sequence from a sub-Antarctic island, South Georgia. In the peat infilling of a rock basin 31 bryophyte species and many of the principal species of the present-day angiosperm flora, associated with bog communities, have been identified. The zonation of the bryophytes and the seeds and fruits shows a striking correspondence with the sediment strat…

  • Problems in Dating Stone-Age Settlements on Sandy Soils

    Open Access•Mark J Y Van Strydonck, Jean-Pierre Van Roeyen et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•1995•Citada por: 4•Referencias: 4

Archaeological sites on sandy soils often suffer from dislocation of artifacts and datable materials. Because stratigraphy and context lose their meaning in such cases, all 14 C dates in this study were put in a dispersion diagram regardless of the sample origin. We drew conclusions about the chronology of the site by comparing this diagram with archaeological analysis of the artifacts and the evolution of the landscape. The dating series, as wel…
