  • Holocene Climate Variability and Cultural Evolution in the Near East from the Dead Sea Sedimentary Record

Open Access•Claudia Migowski, Mordechai Stein et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2006

A comprehensive record of lake level changes in the Dead Sea has been reconstructed using multiple, well dated sediment cores recovered from the Dead Sea shore. Interpreting the lake level changes as monitors of precipitation in the Dead Sea drainage area and the regional eastern Mediterranean palaeoclimate, we document the presence of two major wet phases (∼ 10–8.6 and ∼ 5.6–3.5 cal kyr BP) and multiple abrupt arid events during the Holocene. Th…

  • Rapid climate change during the early Holocene in western Europe and Greenland

    Open Access•Sushma Prasad, Achim Brauer et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Based on microfacies analyses of seasonally laminated varved sediments from lake Holzmaar, Germany, we report evidence of decadal-to century-scale climate variability during the early Holocene. The shifts in climate are documented in the thickness variations and changes in the composition of the varves in response to subtle shifts in limnological conditions. The close similarity between the Holzmaar varve record and the GRIP oxygen isotope record…

  • The late Quaternary limnological history of Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee), Israel

Open Access•Nissim Hazan, Mordechai Stein et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary Research•2005

The freshwater Lake Kinneret (Sea of Galilee) and the hypersaline Dead Sea are remnant lakes, evolved from ancient water bodies that filled the tectonic depressions along the Dead Sea Transform (DST) during the Neogene–Quartenary periods. We reconstructed the limnological history (level and composition) of Lake Kinneret during the past ∼40,000 years and compared it with the history of the contemporaneous Lake Lisan from the aspect of the regional…

  • The Huguang maar lake—a high-resolution record of palaeoenvironmental and palaeoclimatic changes over the last 78,000 years from South China

Open Access•Jens Mingram, Georg Schettler et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2004

  • Tephrochronology of the 100ka lacustrine sediment record of Lago Grande di Monticchio (southern Italy)

  • Precision of Calibrated Radiocarbon Ages of Historic Earthquakes in the Dead Sea Basin

    Open Access•Revital Ken-Tor, Mordechai Stein et al.•ARTICLE•Radiocarbon•2001•Cited by: 4•References: 9

The precise determination of the age of historical and geological events by radiocarbon dating is often hampered by the long intersection ranges of the measured data with the calibration curve. In this study we examine the possibility of narrowing the calibrated range of the 14 C ages of earthquake-disturbed sediments (seismites) from the Late Holocene lacustrine section in the Dead Sea Basin. The calibrated ranges of samples collected from seism…

  • Abrupt environmental oscillations during the Early Weichselian recorded at Lago Grande di Monticchio, southern Italy

  • Circum-Mediterranean lake records as archives of climatic and human history

Open Access•Bernd Zolitschka, Sabine Wulf et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•2000

  • Sediments from Lago di Mezzano, central Italy

    Open Access•Antje Ramrath, Laura Sadori et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2000•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Microscopic, geochemical and pollen analysis of sediment samples of a Lateglacial/Holocene profile from Lago di Mezzano, a maar lake in central Italy, reveals evidence of significant climatic and human-induced environmental changes. Time control is provided by a combination of varve chronology and radiocarbon dating. The well-known Lateglacial climatic variations, a warmer interstadial and the Younger Dryas cold phase are clearly represented in a…

  • Lateglacial calendar year chronology based on annually laminated sediments from Lake Meerfelder Maar, Germany

Open Access•Achim Brauer, Christoph Endres et al.•ARTICLE•Quaternary International•1999

  • Geochemical evidence for Holocene palaeodischarge variations in lacustrine records from the Westeifel Volcanic Field, Germany

    Open Access•Georg Schettler, Bert Rein et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•1999•Cited by: 1•References: 4

Various chemical elements (Fe, Mn, U, Mo) can be transported in both dissolved and solid form and then deposited into lakes. Geochemical profiles of these elements in lacustrine records are therefore potential palaeoclimatic proxies since there should be a positive correlation between discharge from the catchment and dissolved element input. Flux rates for the dissolved input of uranium Ul(t) and the total allochthonous minerog enic deposit were …
