Lead isotopes in the context of the provenance of copper alloys and mutability processes in Lithuania from the second half of the 1st century to the 13th century AD
This paper presents the results of analysis of lead isotope ratios (208Pb/204Pb, 207Pb/204Pb, 206Pb/204Pb, 208Pb/206Pb, 207Pb/206Pb) in copper alloys combined with chemical composition studies of archaeological artefacts by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICPMS). The study covers a total of 208 samples collected from 55 sites spread all over Lithuania. The chronological range of the study encompasses the period from the second half …
Archaeology of Modern Conflict and Heritage Legislation in Lithuania during Thirty Years of Restored Independence
After the Lithuanian National Revival in 1988 and the restoration of independence in 1990, the public on their own initiative searched for the remains of fallen anti-Soviet Lithuanian partisans (1944-1953), excavating the burial sites of partisan remains, their bunkers and dugouts. Such excavations prompted the need to establish regulations and procedures for the exhumation and transfer of the remains of victims of 20th-century conflicts and occu…
Analysis of cultural heritage reference materials by portable and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence measuring methods
This article discusses the results of a large-scale analysis of five cultural heritage alloy reference materials (CHARM) and their shavings using handheld (pXRF) and stationary energy dispersive (ED-XRF) spectrometers. The primary objective of these studies was to assess the capability of the pXRF and ED-XRF spectrometers as a non-invasive surface-measuring technique used for the analysis of the reference materials and the reliability of the data…
Landscape of Resistance. Traces of the Military Training of the Lithuanian Liberation Army in Plokštinė Forest, Samogitia, Northwestern Lithuania
In recent years, fortified and open-type campsites of the Lithuanian Partisan War (1944–1953) have become the subject of archaeological research in Lithuania. The military training camp for soldiers of the Lithuanian Liberation Army (the so-called Vanagai, or Hawks) in Plokštinė Forest (Plungė District), Samogitia region, northwestern Lithuania was investigated by the author of this paper in 2019 and 2020. From 15 to 25 August 1944, in the face o…
Technological investigations of an early 3rd century enamel-decorated drinking horn handle from Maudžiorai cemetery in western Lithuania
Essential changes in the composition of copper alloys reveal technological diversities in the transition from the Earliest Iron Age to the Early Roman period in Lithuania
In the context of archaeometallurgical studies of copper alloys, it is relevant to record the essential changes in the elemental composition of copper alloys that occur during changes in technology and transitions in human history. This article presents the shift in the elemental composition of copper alloy from bronze-based alloys to brass ones during essential changes in archaeological material which happened at the turn of the Earliest Iron Ag…
Manufacture of the Well-Known Central and Northeastern European Eye Fibulae
The emergence and widespread distribution of eye fibulae as adornment objects, from the northern provinces of the Roman Empire to northeastern Europe and Scandinavia, as well as their typology have been widely explored. Currently in Lithuania, a total of 209 eye fibulae dating to the 1st and 2nd centuries are known. The geographical distribution, typology and chronology of these Early Roman Period jewelry artifacts do not present any problem. How…
Early Roman Iron Age Jewellery in the Northern Barbaricum
Laidojimo papročių ir pomirtinio gyvenimo sampratos tyrinėjimai Lietuvos archeologijoje. Istoriografinis aspektas
Investigations of burial practices in Lithuania started in the middle of the 19th century. Since then, concepts of burial, death and the afterlife were brought up in studies (popular and scientific articles, publications and monographs) of many antique lovers, self-educated relic collectors and researchers of prehistoric and historical burial practices. The first attempts to estimate and interpret burial practices originated from the fieldwork…
