Introduction: Voluntariness and Migration
The concept of voluntariness permeates the ethics and politics of migration and is commonly used to distinguish refugees from migrants. Yet, neither the precise nature and conditions of voluntariness nor its ethical significance for migrant rights and state obligations has received enough attention. The articles in this collection move the debate forward by demonstrating the complex ethical judgments involved in delineating voluntary from forced …
Rethinking liberal multiculturalism: Foundations, practices and methodologies
The article introduces a special issue on “Rethinking Liberal Multiculturalism: Foundations, Practices and Methodologies.” The contributions presented in this special issue were discussed during the conference « Multicultural Citizenship 25 Years Later », held in Paris in November 2021. Their aim is to take stock of the legacy of Kymlicka’s contribution and to highlight new developments in theories of liberal multiculturalism and minority rights.…
Fiscal Federalism in Multinational States: Autonomy, Equality, and Diversity
Multinational Federalism, Fiscal Relations and Development in Ethiopia
In this paper, I explore the tensions between multinational federalism and the developmental state in Ethiopia and draw attention on the fiscal and economic dimensions of multinational federalism. In the first section, I explain that the purpose of multinational federalism is to protect minority nations from aggressive, assimilationist and centralizing forms of majoritarian nation-building. As such, multinational federalism only makes sense withi…
The European Union and the Global Compacts on Refugees and Migration: A Philosophical Critique
In this essay, we critically examine how the EU has attempted to shape the Global Compacts and how it positioned itself vis-à-vis the Compacts. We draw on the resources of legal and political philosophy to develop a moral critique of the EU’s position on the Compacts. We reconstruct the philosophical perspective underpinning the EU’s view of the Compacts and we raise various objections to it. Our analysis draws on a distinction between an approac…

Moving the debate forward: Interculturalism’s contribution to multiculturalism
In this article, we compare Ricard Zappata-Barrero's interculturalism with Tariq Modood's multiculturalism. We will discuss the relation between distinct elements that compose both positions. We examine how recent discussions on interculturalism have the potential to contribute to theories of multiculturalism without undermining their core principles. Our position is close to that of Modood's as he has already carefully tried to incorporate inter…
