Bible Translation
This entry surveys Bible translation as a multidisciplinary enterprise at the intersection of applied linguistics, biblical studies, and intercultural communication. After a brief overview of the historical development of Bible translation from the Septuagint to contemporary common‐language and oral/sign‐language versions, it summarizes recent global statistics and the sociolinguistic impact of Scripture translation on literacy, orthography devel…
From the Perspective of Bible Translation
Elaine James (PhD, Princeton Theological Seminary) is Associate Professor of Old Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary in Princeton, New Jersey. According to the book’s description, the author “studies the ancient literature of the Bible with particular attention to its aesthetic and ecological dimensions.” The stated aim of this series of studies is as follows: “Essentials of Biblical Studies comprises freestanding, relatively brief, acces…
The Forms and Functions of Disjunctive Parallelism in the Psalter, With Special Reference to Psalm 132
“Disjunctive parallelism,” in contrast to line-adjacent “conjunctive parallelism,” refers to a perceived parallel line (the “B” colon) that occurs within a text at some point removed from its corresponding “A” line. This stylistic device functions to delineate structural units (strophes, stanzas) of different size within a poetic text and frequently also serves to highlight a certain important motif or theme. Four different types of disjunctive p…
Where Was Korah Killed and What Difference Does It Make? A Brief Structural-Thematic Analysis of Numbers 16
Careful readers often become confused when trying to follow the graphic account of Korahâ€TMs rebellion against Moses recorded in Numbers 16:1–40. Bible commentators do not help very much because either they avoid discussing the apparent narrative inconsistencies, or they are divided on how to construe the Hebrew text. Furthermore, Korah is not the only rebel involved, and his dramatic downfall is just one of two uprisings that are reported, whic…
Re-telling the Word Rhetorically
This study presents a rhetorical analysis of Shadreck Wame, a popular Malawian revival preacher. After an overview of the “rhetorical setting” in which these vernacular sermons were preached in the 1990s, ten “oral-rhetorical techniques” that characterize Wame’s preaching style are identified, based on a corpus of nearly 50 of his Chewa-language sermons that I recorded from radio broadcasts in the 1990s. These features are then illustrated in sel…
Poeticizing the Psalter in an African Language
This study illustrates the application of a literary methodology to the analysis and translation of biblical poetry. The aim is twofold: first and foundational, to reveal salient aspects of the beauty and power of Psalm 13 in the original Hebrew; and second, to experiment with different methods of communicating the original meaning of the psalmist’s passionate prayer with respect to lyric form, content, and function in Chichewa, a major Bantu lan…
Darkness is my closest friend' (Ps 88
On the face of it, there are no bright spots in Psalm 88 no hope at all for the bitterly lamenting psalmist, or seemingly for his readers today either. This intensely individual complaint expresses the dark night of the soul a state of intense spiritual anguish in which the struggling, despairing believer feels he is abandoned by God (Boice 1996:715 716). So why has this disorienting psalm of disorientation (Brueggemann & Bellinger 2014:7) been i…

My tongue is the stylus of a skilled scribe' (Ps 45
In this study, I survey seven characteristics of the poetic-rhetorical style of Psalm 45, with special reference to the sound effects (phonological features) of the Hebrew text. This leads to a brief discussion of the translation of this psalm in Chewa, a Bantu language of southeastern Africa. How skilful does this version sound in the vernacular, and why is this an important aspect of the translator s task in order to ensure that the good word (…
From the Eyes of a Girl to the Eyes of a Goat
For over a decade, Julius Chongo's weekly Nyanja radio drama Poceza m'Madzulo ("Evening Story Time") was the most popular program ever aired on the Zambia National Broadcasting Services. How did this masterful author-performer utilize his dynamic vocal technique to give "eyes" to an invisible and sightless audience—one very different from that of a typical vernacular oral performance setting? My study investigates eight important narrative techni…
