  • Caucasia and Byzantium

Cyril Toumanoff•CHAPTER•Languages and Cultures of Eastern…•2018

Perhaps not unnaturally, but disastrously for itself, Byzantine historiography has so far, if at all, tended to view the role played by the Caucasians, especially Armenians, in the history of the Eastern Empire with somewhat parochial, or microcosmic, eyes. 1 To those eyes, Armenia, and Caucasia in general, remain largely a terra incognita, despite occasional inroads into that unknown territory. Thus, even when, as of late, the importance of, esp…

  • Chronology of the Early Kings of Iberia

    Open Access•Cyril Toumanoff•ARTICLE•Traditio•1969

The are several reasons why the problem of early-Georgian, and particularly early-Iberian (East Georgian), chronology has been a vexing one. In the first place, the early-Georgian historical works contain almost no direct chronological indications, i.e., dates, but rather offer quite numerous relative indications, i.e., synchronisms, lengths of reigns and lives, regnal years, the distance between events, etc. Secondly, in these historical works, …

  • Introduction to Christian Caucasian History II

    Open Access•Cyril Toumanoff•ARTICLE•Traditio•1961•Cited by: 1

Part One of this Introduction was concerned with the historical background of Caucasian Society; it dealt, accordingly, in some detail with the genesis and structure of that society, more particularly of its creative minority, the nobility, and in especial the spearhead of the nobility, the group of the dynastic princes. That study investigated also the ethos of this important and restricted group, a caste in fact, and its juridical status: the s…

  • Caucasia and Byzantine Studies

    Open Access•Cyril Toumanoff•ARTICLE•Traditio•1956•Cited by: 1•References: 1

All too slowly, but nevertheless, it is to be hoped, steadily, Byzantine scholars are becoming aware of the special importance of studies dealing with Christian Caucasia — principally Armenia and Georgia — for the studies ex professo their own. That this claim of Caucasiology to a place of special importance in Byzantine studies is no empty boast, an examination of the nature of the Byzantine-Caucasian relations will make amply clear. In the doma…

  • Christian Caucasia between Byzantium and Iran

    Open Access•Cyril Toumanoff•ARTICLE•Traditio•1954•Cited by: 3•References: 1

    1. The story of how one of the two great Caucasian nations, the Armenians, came to form a national Church, while the other, the Georgians, remained for several centuries longer within the unity of the Church Universal, is still to be written. Practically all that has been said on the subject stands in need of revision. This is due to several factors in connection with Caucasian sources. In the first place, these sources were for a long time unsat…
