How do Berlin, London, Madrid, New York, and Paris mid-range hotels handle mixed reviews of domestic tourists? A cross-cultural comparison
This study examined how independent and mid-range chain hotels in five global cities responded to mixed reviews from domestic guests on Booking.com. The analysis of 1000 guest-hotel interactions showed that the use of defensive response strategies depended on both hotel affiliation and cultural context. Additionally, the use of empathetic and solution-oriented responses varied across countries. These findings offer novel insights into the influen…
Government communication as a means to combat disinformation in Spain and Flanders
The COVID-19 crisis was accompanied by an “infodemic” of disinformation on an unprecedented scale. Governments had to tackle the detrimental effects of disinformation on society by adopting various communicative strategies. This study uses a critical discourse analysis to investigate to what extent and in what ways government communication campaigns promoting corona vaccination in Flanders and Spain interacted with disinformation. First, the regi…
The perception of the African-American community through the eyes of the Hispanic media in the U.S
In this paper, 36 English and 38 Spanish news articles were selected from English and Spanish newspapers and magazines published in the U.S.A. from August 2014 to November 2014. All articles discuss the death of Michael Brown, the ensuing protests and police investigations. A discourse analysis shows that there are few differences between reporting by the mainstream and the Hispanic media. Like the mainstream media, the Hispanic media adopts a ne…
Hispanics and effective health care communication in the United States of America
Health care reform and immigration reform are heated subjects in the United States of America. The main research question of this paper links the two by analyzing the effectiveness of government communication about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) towards Hispanics. The expansion of health insurance does not necessarily ensure access to care for all members of this minority group. Apart from questions of eligibility, immigrants face other obstacles,…
Communication for Maritime Purposes
Multilingual and multicultural crews have become the rule rather than the exception in the globalised maritime world. Professionals as well as researchers indicate that this increases the risk of miscommunication both on board and in external communication with major consequences for efficiency and safety (Deboo 2004, de la Campa Portela 2005 & 2006, Horck 2005, Squire 2006, Trenkner 2010). The mission statements of international shipping compani…
Lsp Research Today
The purpose of this article is to examine whether a “general approach for specific purposes”, i.e. a general approach to Language for Specific Purposes (LSP) research, is possible or even desirable. We will briefly review some of the major changes that have taken place in LSP research, and this with a view to situating the five studies that have been included in this special issue of ITL – International Journal of Applied Linguistics. The approac…

Enhancing Automaticity Through Task-based Language Learning
In general terms automaticity could be defined as the subconscious condition wherein ‘we perform a complex series of tasks very quickly and efficiently, without having to think about the various components and subcomponents of action involved’ (DeKeyser 2001: 125). For language learning, Segalowitz (2003) characterised automaticity as a more efficient, more accurate, and more stable performance. As such, automaticity is often associated with syst…
