Predominant polarity as a potential moderator of group CBT outcomes in bipolar disorder
The results suggest predominant polarity may be an important moderator of CBT response in BD. Further studies should include larger samples
Poor Agreement between Responses to the International Physical Activity Questionnaire and Objective ActiGraph® Data among Persons with Major Depressive or Bipolar Disorders
The purpose of this research was to investigate the degree of agreement between data from the International Physical Activity Questionnaire-Short Form (IPAQ) and accelerometer (ActiGraph ® ) readings for physical activity (PA), classified as moderate, vigorous, and moderate-vigorous PA, and sedentary behavior (SB) in participants with major depressive or bipolar disorder. Following a cross-sectional observational design ( n = 30), participants us…
Neurological, Psychiatric, and Psychological Implications of the Covid-19 Pandemic
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 disease (SARS-CoV-2) is the most severe manifestation of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Accruing evidence indicates that the COVID-19 pandemic may have profound deleterious neurological, psychiatric, and psychological outcomes. The number of systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analyses (MAs) on this topic has grown exponentially. This protocol aims to synthesize all evidence fro…
Microcephaly measurement in adults and its association with clinical variables
OBJECTIVE: To establish a microcephaly cut-off size in adults using head circumference as an indirect measure of brain size, as well as to explore factors associated with microcephaly via data mining. METHODS: In autopsy studies, head circumference was measured with an inelastic tape placed around the skull. Total brain volume was also directly measured. A linear regression was used to determine the association of head circumference with brain vo…
Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments ( Canmat ) and International Society for Bipolar Disorders ( ISBD ) 2018 guidelines for the management of patients with bipolar disorder
The Canadian Network for Mood and Anxiety Treatments ( CANMAT ) previously published treatment guidelines for bipolar disorder in 2005, along with international commentaries and subsequent updates in 2007, 2009, and 2013. The last two updates were published in collaboration with the International Society for Bipolar Disorders ( ISBD ). These 2018 CANMAT and ISBD Bipolar Treatment Guidelines represent the significant advances in the field since th…
The Attrition of Hospice Volunteers
This article reviews findings regarding the attrition of hospice volunteers. Ways to improve retention relating to several aspects of the volunteer administrator's job are suggested: selection of volunteers, training, overseeing the transition from training to actual volunteering, structuring communication between volunteers and paid staff, and supervising and supporting volunteers in their work with patients and families. Suggestions for further…
Predicting Performance and Persistence in Hospice Volunteers
In a group of 75 prospective hospice volunteers, screened and accepted for training, those rated as performing satisfactorily differed significantly from those rated as performing unsatisfactorily or those who dropped out six months after completion of training. Discriminant function analysis indicated that a function consisting of death anxiety, tolerance, and flexibility significantly differentiated the three groups of volunteers. The satisfact…
